New proof sets loose?!

From the US mint I have bought 2015 and 2020 brand new from their website in the past. But upon opening them the hard plastic shells are loose. I nearly lost all of my quarters on the ground just opening the cardboard box last year. I don’t have the dates in between so I can’t say if it’s a quality control problem. 2021 doesn’t have this issue, i’m just curious and wondering does anybody else have this issue? And if so how can I seal these sets for good and not have to worry about the coins falling out?

    thanks in advance!

Maybe some USPS employees on their lunch break were using the package as a frisbee just to pass the time.:rolleyes:

I suggest not using a jackhammer opening the box.

Kidding aside, I've never had that problem with any proof sets I've purchased from the mint.

I can't remember but some of these could be snapped back together.

Now that is a new one. Usually guys are trying to figure out how to break IN to those clamshells.

I'm thinking most of those sets can be pried open with a thumbnail -- then again, I've got pretty good thumbnails. They definitely aren't sealed, though, at least in my experience.

The mint complaint department is closed, please call back next year or after. If it's a packing problem, deal with it, for all other issues stay on the line and someone will be with you when ever. This call may be monitored for quality control purposes, but probably not, thanks for calling.

There is the probability (as opposed to possibility) that the sets you received were returned, and were switched out by the original recipient. This has definitely happened to other collectors. Once the capsules are opened, they do become...I will use the word "distorted". The quality is not the best. Some persons were ragging the capsule with alcohol. It distorts the capsule. One fellow told me he uses WD 40 to open. Go figure.

i've never had this issue before with a mint or proof set, however packaging malfunctions do occur, like the Native American Coin and currency set from 2019. many of the sets had the dollar bill far out of alignment and stuck in the adhesive that frames around the window. I have to assume there's some percentage of mint and proof sets that would fail a QC exam that make it through and go out, I'd guess it's just bad luck, or possible rough handling from the shipment carriers.

I hear speculation the mint will take a return and send it out again to another customer, I really can't believe it's not checked out if it's acceptable to go out to another customer and the reason for the return checked. I don't know how true that is, but I do know packaging problems occur, and I do think shipment carriers can be quite abusive with small packages and toss them around quite a bit.

Below isn't my picture, but mine was very similar to this one in alignment. I'd say likely 80+% of this particular product the dollar was a little bit, or way out of place.

oh and I'd like to add, IF the mint does send out returns again to another customer, it would be in your best interest to order from them in the first couple days of release, not giving time for returns to come back to them.

in case that is something that happens.

My Native American package's dollar bill was also offset. I had another one also, but I can't remember which one it was. I chose to leave them as they were because messing with them could cause some damage to the dollar bill. I did get 2016 Gold Dime after it had been returned or the packaging looked like someone had opened it, but for the life of me, after looking at it over and over, I couldn't find anything wrong with it. I left it in the Mint's packaging. I like to leave as many as I can in the packaging that they came in to avoid any damage.
Your note that you got some coins from the mint and they were loose? I'm pretty sure it didn't leave the Mint that way, or at least that is my opinion, because as mentioned above, those were the only items that I had any "minor" complaint about.
Anyway, if you are unhappy with what you got, they send a return sheet with each item they sell.

Many good points, I don’t know what to think. But when you don’t even need fingernails to pull them apart (they’re that loose like that from the day I got them from the mint.) I think it’s a they problem. Look at late 1960s and early 70s proof sets they were solid and cost less than half back then lol! I do need a way to close these for good without harming the coins. If anyone has any ideas I’d love to hear them!

WOW. That is crazy to see. I can’t believe they would let that even happen. We pay good money for these things, problems like this should never happen.

Does anyone think bonding the two clamshells together by melting the plastic is a good idea as opposed to plastic cement?

Never knew that. So I don’t have to crack out all my no S proof coins. Kidding

The 2011 5 coin Anniversary sets had issues. One of my sets had a loose coin in the box. The capsule was in there intact/sealed but empty. Others reported the same.
