Pictures would help.. But a dark color is usually Environmental Damage. Dimes have a clad layer that is affected due to exposure to dirt, soil, sand, weather. I metal detect and have found thousands of darker color clad coinsvand even nickels. Tje missing letter E is usually due to a Die that had some debris the filled the incused E so it did not form well on the coin Planchet when it was struck. This is referred to as a Struck Through Grease and could happen in any year.
