Hey gang, I saw a Jerry Garcia colorized coin on ebay that says it is from the US Mint in 2020. How can I find out if this is legit? I searched for it on the US Mint website and couldn't find it. Thanks, RB
Because the mint isn't in the business of hawking colorized crap. Most likely, the coin underneath is real and then someone did the painting or sticker or whatever over top. A lot like the half dollars with stickers of presidents or Elvis or whatever. You can also check the mint's catalogue to see what they produced last year. Nowhere will you see a Jerry Garcia coin.
Thanks much. FYI, here it is: https://www.ebay.com/itm/324313489640 I guess they are counterfeiting the coin box that says "United States Mint". Man I hate counterfeiters!
Yeah they painted the reverse of an ASE. It is in the OGP from the mint. Either way, it's junk and only worth its weight in silver.
This one is WAY more than I can spend for a gift, but if you don't mind giving your thoughts on this one I'd appreciate it: https://www.ebay.com/itm/184306693651 It says "This auction is for (1) ONE Jerry Garcia Eyewitness Commemorative Medal Sterling Silver Coin Franklin Mint. This Medal/Coin is 1oz of Pure Sterling Silver. This uncircluated Jerry Garcia Eyewitness Commemorative Medal was Manufactured shortly after the passing of Jerry Garcia and was pulled shortly after when the Franklin Mint was hit with a cease and desist order. " Could that be legit? I guess it doesn't really matter since it's way too costly, but I'm interested to know if this is phony also. Thanks, RB
This one might work as a gift. It doesn't claim to be from the Mint. Just a commemorative coin made by a third party (Grateful Dead Productions). https://www.ebay.com/itm/333995396841
Franklin Mint tended to peddle in commemorative stuff. A lot of the time it was sterling silver like the one in the link. It's probably legit. Is it worth that much? I highly doubt it.
Of the 3, this is the most interesting to me. I like the design better. It was minted by some third party like you said. Is it worth that much? Again, I don't know. That's for you to decide
As an old Dead Head ...I've been to about 40 shows when Jerry was still around... Yup, the first one is a genuine American Silver Eagle but numismatically worthless, over-layed with what looks like a thin plastic print of an ok image of Jerry. The next one is funny...I actually collect some nice Franklin Mint pieces, including gold...that is one of the worst FM pieces I've ever seen lol! Looks like a fat version of Jerry's unknown brother lol! The last one is a very limited edition "Steal Your Face" silver art round from Liquid Blue...Very cool and desirable! but massively overpriced unless you are a hardcore Dead Head collector or something.
Weird. I posted a couple more posts earlier that showed up as "guest" I guess since I wasn't logged in. So I logged in and those posts are gone! Damn. I'll have to try to recreate them. Are they truly GONE?
As a guitar player and long time Dead Head, that medallion and price makes me want to do the technicolor yawn.
Well, the first time I replied to this post I wasn't logged in and now it's gone. So what did I say? Trying to remember... The "funny" one..."a fat version of Jerry's unknown brother". That made me literally laugh. Unfortunately, he did look like that in later years. You say the Steal Your Face one is "massively overpriced" at $199? That doesn't seem too bad to me. Sure, relative to silver content, but that's not what it's about per se. Anyway, it sold and the only ones listed now are $250 and $300. Forget that.
Yeah I saw Jerry during the last year...he was having some diabetes complications...I know, I'm diabetic too. But I don't think he was really taking care of himself the way he should've... but he sure gave us a lot of goodness!!! Yeah I still think that round was way overpriced because other than buying it as an expensive gift for someone it really has no numismatic value and is only the kind of thing a true Dead Head would pay that much for just to have it as a piece to show off.
My avatar is the Liquid Blue steal Your Face. Fortunately I got a couple for not much over melt years ago. I have seen these Garcia Eagles. Not interested.
Never got to see the Grateful Dead, but Bob Weir played on campus back in '79. It was his Heaven Help The Fool tour. Great show.
