Well I think it has come time to sell the entire lot. But I need some help. I want to sell it all at one time no break downs. Does anyone know of a good place or guy that would buy a large lot? This is a 23 Year old collection from colonial to gold. Most are type coins I hate new coins I have them so I can say I have them but thats it. Like I said I think it is time to sell, I'm not hard up for the cash so dont PM me thinking I'll sell cheap.
Good luck then. Selling individually will get you much better money in the long run. Takes more time and effort though.
It really depends. You can probably, but not reliably so, sell individually for the highest dollar value. Selling as a lot will likely bring a fair price, depending on the venue, but this will be the quickest option. If you want to sell here, feel free to list prices in the open section. If you want to sell via eBay, be prepared to reap high prices, but then take 15% off of that for fees. Whatever your choice, good pictures help, and being reasonable helps. Good luck!
No offense intended schatzy, rather just making a point. But anyone who says this has obviously never sold an entire collection. Had they done so, I very seriously doubt they would ever say it. Think about it for a minute, the OP says it took him 23 years to acquire the collection. I can pretty much bet you that it would take at least 1 year, and probably more to sell the same collection if selling the coins 1 by 1. And it would also take and outrageous amount of time & effort. Why ? Because there are not that many people out there who are going to want the coins, either because they don't like the particular coin, they already have it, or the price is not right. Selling a collection 1 coin at a time is not as easy as most people think. It is in fact extremely difficult. Now I've sold 2 entire collections, so I have some experience and know what I am talking about. Which other person here can tell me that they have sold an entire collection before ? My advice ppratt - take or ship your collection to the dealer of your choice. And yes you can trust the shipping, just send it Registered Mail. Break it into packages if necessary, each one is insured for up to $25,000.
I wish I had the $$$, And all of us want a whole collection from an old time collector! I have sold whole collections for Friends and done pretty good.. If the Lot is well documented and photo's I have seen huge lots on Ebay go for well over 60K.. You can set a reserve.. No damage if no sale but the price of the Auction.. Does Heritage do Lots???
I think both points of view have merit, and the optimal approach is probably the one that combines them. In almost every collection, the majority of the value lies in the key and semi-key date coins. If you were a series collector, rather than a type collector, I would estimate that in a given date/mintmark series, anywhere from 70 to 90 percent of the value is in the key/semi-key subset. With type coins, it may be a bit harder to figure out, but the bottom line recommendation is to pick out the most valuable coins in your collection and sell them individually. Then sell the remaining bulk as a set.
Another thing to consider is breaking the collection into sub-sets. Sell them by catagory. Not knowing what all is in the collection makes it a little harder to advise on possible ways to sell. Good luck.
Well, I guess individually is more accurate. Because it certainly wasn't as a whole. Some things I sold as sets though. Like The silver Dollars I sold as a set instead of breaking it up. The cents and dimes, all that stuff stayed in the whitman holders and sold as a set. The duplicates were all sold together, and all excess key's and semi keys were sold individually. I still am not sure what to do with all common date stuff, lots of it is just hole fillers and common stuff worth .10 - 1.00 Kinda hard to figure it out. If you have to ship it somewhereit will weigh so much that the buyer won't pay as much because they have to pay for such expensive shipping. Thus, less money in your pocket.
If you have a good auction house in your neck of the woods, you may want to explore that route. I've bought many a coin at auctions that were geared for the coin, paper, stamp, and card collectors. Make sure that you're dealing with an auctioneer who understands coins. Also, make sure that the coins are clearly identified. I would also recommend that you post your thoughts on the grade somehow. All of this kind of stuff helps the auctioneer. They work for you if you give them a little ammo.
Agree 100%. May not be true for everyone, but my time has a price. Selling a car is similar. Instead of taking pics, writing a description, taking out an ad, having people test drive my car, etc, I traded it in to the car lot. Sure I didn't get as much money, but it saved me a lot of time and effort.
I gave all my comics to my son to sell; not a bad education for him and it hurts less when he gets a good price for something I didn't want to take the time to bag and research prices for!
I would not sell coins/paper or anything of such value to an individual, you risk getting robbed or worse, you probably know that but I thought it was worth mentioning. I have never sold coins on Teletrade but have bought from them and have found some good coins over the years.Yes you get hit with a % commission but the risk & hassles of selling are not to worry about. Maybe some other coin talk members could advise you about their experience of selling on Teletrade.I mentioned this more for your safety then an endorsement for teletrade, buying from them has been no problems for me but I haven't sold anything on line yet. Good luck !
