I stuck to what I knew - key date coins. The list is diversified enough to include different series, so I am not putting all of my eggs in the same basket.
I pretty much stuck to what I know too. I know the AU 1909-O quarter is undervalued at least 4 to 5 fold in the guide and I'm banking on an update in the next year An AU58 sold at auction for over $4000 last year so an AU55 price of $600 is way under market. I also went with 1908-S cents since I still think there's some room on the upside for those. Figures, when I first started working on that strategy the G4 price was $55 and it went up to $58 this week. couldn't they have waited a few more days!!!! I also went with some silver eagles to hedge a bit in case bullion keeps going up. With a guide price of $18 it's currently under spot so not too bad
I did the usual investment thing and looked to see what was going up or down. it was fun to pick anyway and see what happens.
jello, way to go all in on one coin, very impressive!!!! nice coin too, though I hope those don't go up in the next year as I still need a 1909-O $5 for my set
I think that the strategy of why diversifying a portfolio is important will be come more and more apparent as this contest goes on
illini420, I know you know your IHCs with your 1908-S grading set and your 1909 Mint Registry Cent collection, so, I appreciate your going with the 1908-S cents as I always felt they were under appreciated and under valued. While the 1909-S IHC is appreciating rapidly, I believe this coin should soar in value due to it low mintage compared to the 1909 Lincolns. However, My choices have been in the Old Gold and a Newer Gold pieces. We shall see who has chosen the best coins amongst us all. I'd like to be able to buy many of the coins I've seen selected for this contest just to own GREAT coins. It'll be a year before the final judgment. But, I suspect that we'll have many winners in our selections and (hopefully) few losers. Bruce
I picked coins that I do not collect, God forbid that the coins I like should zoom up in price. Also since I am not registered at the pcgs site I could not access a lot of the area, still I tended to put all my eggs in one basket.
I see the other thread is closed now... hope everyone posted their lists By the way, I think I may be in the lead now since one of my coins had a price increase in the Guide 1908-S IHC in G4 went from $58 to $60... so the value of my investment is now up to $10,080!!!!! I'm not going to celebrate yet though, hahaha.
Every day, even on the weekends. But not every coin is updated every day of course; some haven't been updated in years! As of this post, 56 coins went up today and 65 went down. You can check them out here: http://www.pcgs.com/prices/PriceChanges.aspx
Well illini, I also picked a 08s IHC but mine did not go up And I am probably in last as I picked a 31s Lincoln and it dropped!!
personally, if you all expect there to be a ton of movement in most of these coins over the next year, it is unlikely IMHO. Most investments have outperformed coins for years. It is the exception, rather than the rule when they change on a larger scale.
I think the biggest movements you are going to see will be in gold or silver coins, However that can also mean big losses as well. If you have stable coins then it isn't a loss or a gain. If you have some coins that move like gold and silver then you might do a bit better. Just hope that the prices don't fall below what you bought them at. of course it is all play money so it is all good.
Quite frankly, the coins I picked, I really don't expect to see much of an appreciation over one years time. I picked them to hold as a long term investment, and since Mike was so generous with the virtual cash, I added them to my collection. :smile
exactly coins are long term investments or even just collectables. from what i hear it takes about 5 years to recoup your initial investment. so given that we are only working on a 1 year platform we will see what happens. it is the gold and silver that is going to move the most but in which direction is the question.
