Just gotta look closer - these are all on the obv. The rev is pretty clean, a few small ones in the legends, a couple on the eagle, few on the rims. But nothing that would hold the grade down IMO.

The Obverse disturbances, particularly below the Ear, might be a die flaw.

Well, just like George Washington, I can not tell a lie. Nobody is right and nobody is wrong. The coin is raw. FWIW, I grade the coin MS66.

Care to explain your grade. I compared it to a 68, and it more than held its own. The 67's I saw looked like they were peppered with a shot gum compared to this coin.

I hate to say it, Still new to grading but thanks for the practice.. But I give it the 65 very close to 66 But the reverse..
We can go back to a thread from the other day on duel grades and say MS66 Obverse with a 65 Reverse... ??

OK, for the amaturs like me, what is with the distotion to the coin? What causes that? I'm just curious. This is exactly what I'm trying to learn about coins. If I saw this in a shop or at a coin show, would I walk away from this? Not one of you mentioned this. So I want to learn why not? Or is that distortion that I see what you all are calling toning?

Distotion (distortion?)?? Do you mean the toning? Distortion means bent to me.

I missed the fact that the coin was raw

The Toning you are talking about is something I wouldn't walk away from.. Only because each toned coin is unique.. I like that.
Still I don't see great definition on wings or just a weak strike so that is what kinda drops the grade for me... Tone on coins is something you might want to look at.. Some are wonderful.. such Blues and reds.. Must be seen through a loop.. Wow!

It's toning. Most likely toning caused by the coin coming from an original Mint Set from the period. They looked like this one below. The cardboard holder was over-laid with thin pieces of paper. And if that paper ever absorbed any moisture it often caused streaky toning like that you see on the coin in this thread.

I know it has been three years since this thread was last updated, but I am bumping this because I finally did make it a guess the grade. The coin is on its way back from NGC as we speak. Anyone who has not already guessed the grade, please do so now. I will post my newest photos of this coin below.

I will post a photo of the slab in a few days. Good luck!

I'm sticking with NGC 66. I don't mind the toning myself. The more indicative it is ie... mint set, album, roll, etc... (especially lacking treatment) the better. This is usually more important to me than attractiveness.
