No More Satin Finish?

I just finished watching a coin show on TV I had that was recorded earlier. On the show he stated the mint has announced no more satin finish coins will be struck starting in 2010.

I checked the US Mint website, US Mint blog website, and quickly looked through Coin Talk to see if anyone had commented on this. I have been unable to verify what he said anywhere, does anyone here have any information concerning this?

I'm very curious also, but I don't know of anywhere else to check. I'm interested in this primarily in the ASE W that people could buy directly from the mint. If all this is true, I wonder if they are included?

I haven't seen anything on this either but if it is true, I'm sure that Elaine would know.

That would suit me just fine. I liked the regular business-strike uncirculated sets.

I agree with you on that, but I would still like to know. I have an '07, '08 with '07 reverse, and '08 ASE 3 coin set. I never bought the '06 because I didn't want to start a new big collection. However, if they aren't going to make them anymore I may get the '06.

I saw that same program last night MCL, and I usually don't lend them any credibility when it comes to coins, but on these kind of facts they are usually accurate. I don't know where they get their info, but typically they are right about sell-outs and changes.

You know I was thinking... this would effectively halt the hoarding of current-dated coins like the current nickels and dimes by making the circulation strikes available again through the Mint Sets. There would be no reason to hoard them if there are going to be plenty available later in the sealed unc sets.

This morning I watched a couple of coin shows on tv that taped during the night. They again said that 2009 was the end of the satin finish coins.

Again I could not find any information on this, so I called the mint. The person at the mint that took my call stated the mint has not released any information concerning the satin finish coins being stopped.

Not that any of this is life changing, but I am very curious about this.

    You seem to be confused.

Whether or not the mint decides to make satin coins for the mint sets or use business strikes instead is NOT ..repeat NOT related to the production of the ASE W series that the mint sells.

A lot of things I might be, but most days confused is not one of them. They specifically included the West Point mint marked ASE stating they are included in this. They are going so far as selling a three coin set (which they sold out of ) consisting of the '06, 07, and '08 stating these three years are all there is going to be.

No, I dont' think I'm confused at all, but curious yes.

I too saw the show. It was Mike Musak on HSN. He stated that 2009 was the last year the mint was going to produce the Annual Satin Finish Mint Set. He actually made a big deal about it, but then later was pitching the Presidential Dollars auto ship, and specifically said that the series will include the PDS and Satin finish for the entire series (at $99 a year).

Now you may dismiss HSN for buying, but Musak has been in the coin and bullion business for a long time, and he usually has spot on information regarding mint announcements, usually before the press release goes out. Not sure about this as I have been unable to confirm this anywhere else.

By the way, this is my first post, but I am a long time lurker and collector.

Well add to the list of things that you might be is forgetful because you left that information (about them including the ASE W series) out of your original post...lol.

Maybe you need to read the opening again. I didn't mention mint sets or anything else except satin finish coins because what he meant was all satin finish coins. That was what I meant same as him, satin finish coins period.

I'm trying to share something here, it looks as though all the other posters understood what I meant except you. If you are going to post someone is confused or attempt to belittle someone make sure you can understand what you are reading. Maybe you should have asked someone for a clarification first, this is a place to discuss things, not to just jump in and say something like that to me or anyone else.

I didn't start this thread in good faith to have someone tell me I'm confused or that I have a list of shortcomings. From now on since I'm so confused and have so many mental shortcomings you need to skip over anything I post. That was totally uncalled for, there is some etiquette still here I hope.

Welcome to CT , I love your avatar coin , could you post the whole coin in another thread ?
Back to the topic at hand , I won't miss the satin finish , as long as they handle the regular strike W MM coins as carefully as the satin finished coins .

Brian, welcome to Coin Talk. I was wondering myself how are they going to fill all those holes in that autoship prez dollar set they push. I think you get a couple of their display cases with the set, not bad looking cases by the way. I was also wondeering what they will do about that price they charge for it. If it is true about no more satin finish coins they are going to so rare we had all better get them now before they dry up in the marketplace.

Hudson, Larry's a friend of mine and to call him "confused" over this is absolutely not a fair choice of words.. Instead of insulting him(he's a deserving veteran of this forum), just politely tell him what you think he left out and that's it. No need to berate the guy with a stick..

    Just my 2c.

    Sorry Lover.

I thought it was common knowledge that the only satin coins that the US Mint produced were in mint sets. The W series of ASE's aren't considered satin finished. I don't watch coin shows on TV so I didn't know all of the inside info like the others.

Please accept my apology. I'm new and learning the ropes. Also, please call of your protection. BNB runs a good forum here but there is no need to play the heavy and break my knees.

You can call me confused anytime.

Thanks B, those stick swipes leave marks. Plus the blood gets everywhere.

I can't resist getting back to HSN for a moment. When they first came out with this prez dollar set it was set up as a twenty coin set per year. I think I figured this up one night that the two diplays cases included would hold the exact number of these dollars currently to be minted (including eight satin finish per year). If I remember correctly if a prior president has been deceased for two years prior to the final year then they would be added on to have a dollar minted. So what would the people do that collected this set every year do that now the complete collection would not fit in the cases provided?

The mint can be very unpredictable. Some collectors that have been doing this a lot longer than me may know, but it seems they have become more unpredictable over the last two or three years.

I tend to thin if the mint does do away with satin finish prez dollars, they will make their own from business strikes. Surely they would not add gold plated or colorized versions.
There is some set of Susan B. Anthony Dollars they sell that does have one colorized coin in it.
