We're dry over in NM, too

Not having much luck in NM lately, either Bob.

In mid November I had a box with six Franklins. Soon after that I mentioned to you that I had never been completely shut out on a whole box. Since then, I have never found another silver coin.

My last two boxes had four proofs and six 2002 and later coins, but no silver!

I kind of thought once we got into December, people would start cashing in old caches of halves, Ikes, etc., but I haven't found anything too interesting at the banks lately. I will say that I have been too busy to search as much, though. Maybe I'll have better luck in a couple of weeks.

    What to look for

I had my local bank order $100 worth of halves for me with the intent of looking for 1964 and before coins.

I see several posts about later dates.

Can anyone give me a short list of what to look for? I don't want to discard anything of value just because the dates are after 1964.

    Thanks in advance!

All halve dollars up to 1969 have silver content. Those coins from 1965-1969 only contain 40% silver.

Finished going through a $25 box of cents.

There was a good amount of 82 and earlier cents (probably about 35-40%).

    I found 20 wheaties:

    1939 (2)
    1941
    1942
    1944
    1944-D
    1945
    1947-S
    1950-D
    1951
    1951-S
    1952
    1952-D
    1952-S
    1953 (2)
    1956-D (2)
    1958-D (2)

There were probably around 25-30 of the 2009 cents. A lot of them are in bad shape already! Heck, I found nicer 1970s memorial cents.

However, I am upset because I didn't lookout for a 1992 Close AM cent. Guess I'll have to go through the batch again. :goofer:

Fortunately, I've separated the copper from the zincolns.

This morning, I pulled out a BU 1962 Canadian dime out of one a roll of dimes. It has a bit of toning around the inside rim of the obverse but also a rub mark right on the Queen's face:mad:.

Also, got a 1919 wheat in my change from the grocery store.

A couple of days ago someone paid for some product with fifteen 1944 and 1945 "V" nickels (Canadian). I bought them all.

Oh, I forgot to mention in my 2 most recent boxes of halves, I did find an '87P - my first one in over $9,000 worth of coins. Just need the 1970 and the '87d to finish the album. Seems strange to find more Walking Liberties and Franklins than 1987 coins...

Most dates are still out there, including the 38 and 39, even a few war years (silver). Some D's and S's are quite hard to find, however, like the 38 and 39. Of course the 50 D is the prize.

Actually, 65 - 70 (not just 69) are 40% silver. 1970 halves are actually worth more than a 90% silver 1964 in mide to high grades because the mintage is low (only released in mint sets).

Other things to look for since you asked:

Halves with an 's' mint mark are proofs and are fun to find. Be sure to check if they are silver as some of them can be from a silver mint set (I found a 76 silver proof).

1987 also has low mintage and are hard to find...those are keepers.

in 2002, they stopped making halves for circulation so many keep 2002 and forward since their mintage totals are lower than previous years.

1982, 1983, and 1989P all have an error call the "no FG" error (you may find this on other years too). Look near the eagle's feet on a half dollar and find the "FG" which are the designer's initials. The 3 years I mentioned have coins that are missing the FG. This is a keeper.

The 1974 D Doubled Die Obverse. Look for doubling in the "We Trust." These are definite keepers.

    Hope that helps.

I'm working on it for my son. We have found the 50-d and one War Nickel, and only need the 68-s to complete '62 - '95 whitman.

Also found (yesterday) a 20 cent Singapore in a bank roll of nickels.
