Pennsylvania 5 Shillings June, 18 1764 Printed by Benjamin Franklin and David Hall. If you have some colonials, post 'em!
I collect Franklin pieces as well. I prefer the Delaware issues myself, but have many Penn issues. There was also a NJ issue.
Anything with Franklin on it would be amazing. Are they difficult to find? I've never honestly tried, thinking that they may be out of reach.
Big Ben, one of the greatest American (British lineage) inventors of all time. I collect the silver half dollar in his honor. Nice post, thank you.
There has been a recent up tick in prices. Mine was a graduation gift from my father. Denly's of Boston has a few PA notes, but a F example is $855. https://www.denlys.com/inventory/display.asp?table=[Inventory - Colonial]&state=PA edit, there are a few Delaware notes under $500 https://www.denlys.com/inventory/display.asp?table=[Inventory - Colonial]&state=DE
Not printed by Franklin (he sold his share of the business to Sellers) but said to be designed by Franklin. Sorry about showing only one side. I photographed it years ago for other purposes and the bill is in my bank SD box. Not certified, but I have owned it since 1963.
David Hall was born in Scotland in 1714 and became a journeyman printer in Franklin's firm in 1743 having just prior emigrated from Scotland. Hall, being a a reliable associate became a full partner of Franklin in 1748 and ran the firm during Franklin's extended travels to Great Britain during the 1750's and 1760's. In all likelihood after 1748 Franklin really had little to do with his printing business in Philadelphia beyond being a passive partner and investor - so unlike my 1746 Delaware note which was printed by Franklin - this note was printed by David Hall. Franklin's name continued being displayed on the notes through the 1764 issue, in 1766 Franklin sold his interest in the firm to David Hall who subsequently brought in William Sellers as a partner in the business. After David Hall's demise in 1772 William Sellers continued the firm under the Hall and Sellers name until his demise in 1804. Hall and Sellers would be the primary printing contractor for Pennsylvania and later Continentals and 1780 Guaranty notes.
@Antonius Britannia, @Chris B, @medoraman, @Neal, @scottishmoney. Thank all of you for posting. I know a lot more about these than what I did, which was almost nothing, lol. Enjoyed seeing them, and reading about them. As usual, CT members do not disappoint! Also, thanks to all who commented, all of you are much appreciated.
