1855-S seated liberty quarter, so ugly but so beautiful.

    Hey all,

thought I’d share this coin I was able to snag for a decent price for is scarcity. This reminds me of the 1875-S 20C piece I shared a while back. Tried the acetone bath and nothing budged. Still wanted to show her off! As ugly as she is and worn that some of the stars can hold up as they have is pretty incredible.

Could it have been in a fire?

Reminds me of my German New Guinea 1 shilling; ugly, but cheap!

That would make sense since the amount of wear.

Seems to be a big possibility in my opinion. Like I said acetone did nothing. If it was a fire would the acetone make the black more lighter do you know?

Actually that’s a very nice coin. Despite the coloring on it I seriously doubt it’s been on the fire because it looks too good. I’ve seen coins that have been in a coin shop that burnt to the ground and this looks nothing like that.

I highly doubt that acetone would help but a quick dip in E-Zest might remove some of the darkness. At any rate it was a great pick up.

I need to check out coins that have been in fires because I have a few coins that look like this. You would think they’d look more deformed then this. What do you think caused the coloring? And I will have to pick some of that stuff up to try.

Hard to say about what caused the coloring other than the environment. Just don’t scrub or rub it as that will cause more damage.

Okay, yea I dropped her in acetone for a little bit and nothing happened so just going to leave it as is.

Acetone won’t remove stains or toning. It just removes debris or gunk buildups on coins. Sometimes a little help is needed is the gunk is thick.

I’ll keep that in mind, I will order some some of that E-Zest I have it in my Amazon cart now. I picked up some stuff called classic coin conditioner from wizard coin supply, is this similar?

I’m not familiar with the coin conditioner from Wizard but they are a good outfit. The E-Zest works great but if you over dip it removes the luster and while it makes it shine, it can cause a dullness. You must also hold under running warm water for a good rinse.

I may leave this one out of any testing just in case but I do have some other pieces I will try it out on. From my understanding this product is for “hydrating” the coin to keep it safe from environmental damage. I’m
Not sure if it will remove anything.

Best to try it on a lower grade non essential common date coin. With damage if you have one. Lol
