A friend of mine asked me if I thought any of these coins are real. I have no idea so I figured I’d post pix of them on this forum and ask the question. To me they don’t seem real, but what do I know. They have them on a piece of chain jewelry, holes drilled through Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Look real to me. Quite popular in Europe to take a de-monetized coin, drill it and make a necklace or other jewelry out of it.
They appear real as far as I can tell. Nothing very valuable stands out, though the first coin (Netherlands 2 1/2 guilders) is silver so still has some value despite being holed. The last coin (South Africa 1 penny 1957) is actually bronze and has been silver-plated (you can see some of the plating coming off). Just curious @VistaCruiser69 , what about them makes you suspect they might be fake?
They are real, I bought my first 1833 Hawaiian quarter on an old silver bracelet of holed coins - for about $40, which also included Mercury dimes and some other less interesting US silver coins. I'd forgotten all about that, lol, that thing is at the bottom of a drawer somewhere, I'll have to dig it out one of these days.
Thank you for all of the information and replies. I greatly appreciate them all. The coins are on a piece of chain jewelry, not really done that professional looking IMO, so I suspected they may be like costume jewelry or something like that. I’ll let the guy know about the one silver coin. I did tell him that if any are silver and not rare, they would be most valuable as melted for the silver since holes are drilled in them. I advised him yesterday that drilling holes in them takes away most of the value, if they had any value in the first place.
Weight is a give away to me. Unless they are aluminum, the fake coins on a bracelet are very light. Those appear real and were most likely on a bracelet. I too, have removed and saved foreign coins from bracelets, just because I liked the designs.
Yes, and it's quite large and gaudy (IMO). That's why I kind of suspected in the beginning that it wasn't real coins.
Yes, this is a bracelet. Not sure how comfortable wearing such a thing would be, it's heavy and doesn't look that comfortable. Like wearing a pair of handcuffs on only one wrist, I would imagine.
