I was going through some of my fathers coin's, and came across this one. I never noticed it before...but it appears that there might be a D behind the P on the mintmark. Tell me what you think. Pleeeeze:goofer:
Interesting, although the "D" would appear to be smaller then a regular wartime nickel mint-mark. Someone with more knowledge in errors will chime in soon
I just realized that I only have P and S mintmark wartime nickels..I can not compare it to the size of a wartime D Mintmark..
While it looks tantalizing, I'm going to attribute it to a die scratch or something similar. I find it highly unlikely that a normal-sized D made it into the wartime position. Not that it's not possible, but as much as these have been studied, I'd think it would have been found by now.
I've never seen a 1943 P/P Jefferson nickel as this. I believe looking at it that it is an 1943 P/P with the tail of the P missing and the top part struck twice thus looking like a "D" To me it's an WRPM-009 /RPM#29 but it's very cool find. I also believe that this coin was to me struck with a die that was failing or wearing out. Being it was war time they probably use the dies til they failed completely. The 1943 P nickel had several varieties of hub doubling the most known was the 1943/2 and the 1943 P/P . As stated in the post before this one that if this was an P/D it would of been found way before this time peroid, and that the "D" would of been larger , and narrower than the top of the "P". Again a cool find....
Now that's a really nice error that you don't see around much. I bet it would bring you a good price on ebay!
I think that the coin is damaged. There are several areas of damage on the coin and the likelihood is that the mark is just another area of damage. Thanks, Bill
could be...If I just could find a P/P to compare it to...I have looked and can not find any others..anyone help me on that? Thanks
