Hello ladies and gentlemen, As Pegasus was completely missing from my collection, I managed to grab this. Described as Corinthia. Corinth circa 345-307 BC. Hemidrachm AR 13 mm, 1,87 g But I have some issues in attributing it. Who is on this coin? I found somehow similar coins attributed against Aphrodite wearing sakkos. Is this correct? Some similar coins - https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=7892290 (Aphrodite facing right) https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=7670500 https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=6768067 Second problem - all the coins I found are drachms. Is there the possibility that this is just a lighter drachm? All the coins I found, attributed as drachms, are over 2.2 g.
I LOVE this coin! I'd thought maybe it was possibly a denomination between drachm and Hemidrachm... but that doesn't seem to exist. I'm wondering if it is just light to to roast wear and tear from being in circulation? Either way, great coin I've nothing like it to post, so I'll post this image by the Romans of the pegasos:
Hi, ambrOzie, The weight is low for a drachm, but not unique. I just came across one in auction with an even lower weight. biddr - Numismatica Ars Classica Zurich, Auction 123, lot 524. Greek Coins. Corinthia, Corinth. Drachm circa 350/300, AR 1.62 g. Pegasus flyi... Besides, all the Corinthian hemidrachms I know of only have the forepart of Pegasus. Yours has the whole animal, so it's safe to say it's a drachm. There's some wear on the bottom part so I'm not sure where it's from. At first a recognized the top of a koppa (Corinth), but on second thought I'm not sure. It just might be a decorated lambda. (?) (Leukas)
Thank you, Leukas might be a correct path. I also thought I see a koppa under Pegasus but the obverse person remains unclear. Aphrodite or ....? There also seems to be a monogram behind head, not sure if this will be more visible in hand ....
Could be, but the closest match I can find, although not sure, is BCD Corinth 162. https://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/corinth/t.html It appears to be the same monogram behind head - ΠA What is under Pegasus is unclear
