Just wanted people to know I hadn't ignored it. It's just something I don't collect. I wish all the Gobrecht dollars were proofs. They are, and will continue to be, a big hole in my type set.
The sad thing is...those impossible coins are the one's that keep me from focusing on a type set. I don't think I can ever complete one.
Without pulling out my resource stuff (not a good idea at work).... Don't the Gobrecht dollars feature Seated Liberty with no stars? I am a nut about seated Liberty coins and that piece with her and a plain field just takes my breath away.... Though at the price point I believe I will continue to admire her from a distance.
The Four Dollar Gold Piece is something I will never get. The only time I was tempted was when dealer I know well had a couple of the gold platted copper pattern examples. Those are just as rare or rarer as the gold pieces, but seldom are mentioned. The prices were in the $50,000 range, and the coins were very nice.
I have owned two Golbrecht Dollars during my time as a collector. The first one is said to be a restrike. ** It is die alignment IV. (Head of Liberty opposite the "O" of "OF.") I bought it raw in the early 1980s. NGC graded it PR-58. I sold it after I bought the next one. This piece is currently in my collection. It is an original 1836 strike with the eagle flying "onward and upward." This piece is a PCGS PR-62 CAC. This piece would be a PR-63 or 64 if it were not for a dull spot in the right obverse field. Of course then it would have been beyond my budget. ** I have often wondered about the "restrike" thing with these coins. If the mint made and sold these coins to collectors, why are so many them circulated or impaired? If they were sold to collectors, why aren't they better preserved?
