    Hello everyone,

Ive recently started putting together a collection of silver shillings from England/GB. At the moment I’m just trying to obtain one of every monarch, going backwards from George V (the last .925).

Does anyone else collect shillings? I’d love to see some collections!

I’ve got an example of each from Edward VI to the 1970 Elizabeth (which was given to me on joining the Royal Navy known as the queens shilling)

Wow, thats awesome! That’s kind of my goal, is to get back to Edward VI. Wasn’t that the actual first “shilling?” And before that they were “testoons?” I could be wrong, I’m very new to English coins.

I do have a 2021 book on pre decimal English coins arriving today. Hopefully that will educate me a bit more.

    There are English shillings(up to 1707) British shillings(before 1937) English shillings(1937-1970) and Scottish shillings(1937-1970).

Oh, an' yes I have a few hundred of them at least.

Here are some of the shillings that reside in my personal collection. Personally, I'm attempting to build a date set of shillings from 1816 to 1970, but it'll be a long time before I ever complete it.

I have a very sentimental 2 shilling from when my uncle ( Purple Heart Received ) brought it back from the War . 1937 florin-obv-tile.jpg

I collect the coins of the three Georges (though mainly George III) and that includes the shillings. Have not invested enough in British coins to get a really nice one, but I do love finding them in foreign melt bins.

Here's two I bought for the grand total of $5. Not in great shape but at $5 it beats generic bullion. I keep them in my pre-1840 silver bag.

About 20 years ago I set myself the target of every GB shilling from 1662 to 1970 - all dates and all monarchs. I am missing only 8 from 1692 onwards, but missing 16 before that date. (Some Charles II shillings are just too difficult!)
    Here are a select few:

Ill try to get some pics of the 1/- in my collection - I have a tasty proof 1911, as well as a very high grade 1866...

Wow. I seriously like some of the coins you guys just posted. I will be looking at those. I bought 2 shillings this week. Here's 1 of them. Seller pics and I don't have it in hand yet. Internet_20210506_185346_2.jpeg Internet_20210506_185346_1.jpeg

@Seascape - what you have there is a Twelfth of a Shilling from Jersey, not a whole shilling. It is about UK pre-decimal penny size and bronze - I hope that won't be too much of a disappointment to you...

Nah. This buy was a completely different buy than one I would have high expectations. Rough week at work...1/2 hour at night decompressing.... It's times like this I stay away from $300 coins that make me think alot. I bought the coin just because I liked it. Sometimes these these purchases lead to finding key dates and spending more time and money. Sometimes they don't.

Thanks for your insight however. I hope I didn't screw up this thread.

Thank you all for your insight and sharing your collections. I’ve found great joy in putting together a collection of this type. Here is what I’ve acquired thus far. I know, they’re rough. I have an Elizabeth I and George II shillings on the way. 68CAD79E-C994-458A-80CC-2E617E201989.jpeg F595D08E-8F34-450C-831D-DDFB30E7682C.jpeg
