I agree with all of the above. And yes, once I get over my initial "My bid was the high bid! Um . . .did I pay too much?" reaction, I'm usually very happy with what arrives.

You know you bid too high if you get a giddy feeling when you get the message "YOU'VE BEEN OUTBID " . . . .

I feel this way if I buy an unsold lot. Part of me thinks, “Hey, I’m getting a bargain.” Part of me thinks, “Why do I want this coin when everybody else doesn’t?”

 

Once again I was spectacularly defeated in today's auction.... It has kinda become my monthly day of disappointment... It is a bit masochistic watching people outbid you on coins you really like...

And like last time, first thing I did afterwards to calm my regrets was to go a buy a coin from a retail shop

Is this going to be the pattern for my coin collecting experience from now on?

 

That feeling is trending in the numismatic community of ordinary people.
I think the thing to do now is to either take a break, or find an area that is interesting if you put some work and reading into it, but un-flashy. The magpies are rampant.

 

Keep up your spirit! I got 1 out of 3 bids, and another coin I was following with great interest proved to be out of my league to even try a bid. Ivm not a high bidder. The one coin i got in the end today, is one I think i got for a fair price. I have been outbid on this type many times before, even with bids higher than my bid today. Its difficult to compare bids, since there's always a difference in quality, patina, etc of the coin, let alone an uninformed bidder with too much cash....
Anyway, my point is, in the end you'll get the coin, question is how long are you willing to try. There's frustration, but also hope in this conclusion

Same for you @svessien, you have shown many good coins and you enjoy collecting, dont let a (annoying but hopefully temporary) bump hit you off track.

(I have no idea if this last saying makes sense in English...)

 

Limes, December 2020 - March 2021 has been my best and most active coin buying period since 2010! And in between there are still good buys. I received this coin 3 weeks ago:

Size: 18 mm Weight: 3,21g Conservation: nearly extremely fine

Sear notes only 2 recorded samples of this coin. I guess this is (at least) number 3. It cost me 55€.
It’s not as shiny and sexy as a silver tetradrachm though. But aren’t those eyes intriguing?

 

One of the advantages of being an ultra-generalist is that prices are unlikely to be high in every area of interest. There were quite a few Florentine coins in the auction today and I managed to go from zero to 5 in that area of my collection. Here's a ratty one I was nevertheless quite happy to get:

I really wanted one dated to 1478, the year of the Pazzi conspiracy. This takes up much of the action in the 2nd Medici series on Netflix, with Sean Bean playing Jacopo Pazzi:

I also made one of my rare modern purchases, this franc of Napoleon's sister Elisa Bonaparte, issued after Napoleon awarded her political power in Tuscany:

She was quite something! Her Corsican noble/military husband, in the background on the coin, was also very much in the background in every other way too. Despite the fact that he was taught by the famous virtuoso Niccolo Paganini, he was even a bad violinist. Paganini was there more for Elisa (nudge, nudge, wink, wink!)

 

I managed to get my top two today - after which I realized I spent too much and didn’t even bother to follow up on the rest. But I am happy with my wins (or I will be when they arrive in hand...)

 

I won two..... and given my lack of auction and coin acumen, I was surprised that I won given the market volatility s as of late. I won both of mine on bids I had placed earlier, and THAT hasn’t happened for quite some time!
Gaius Germanicus denarius, and yes, my second Severus cuirasses elephant. I sit here and wonder if I paid too much given that I won so easily.
