Shown below are three uncirculated 1954-S Jefferson Nickels. Please vote in the attached poll indicating which coin your prefer and if you feel like opining on the grade of each nickel, do so in your reply to the thread. Coin #1: Gemmy Coin #2: Woody Coin #3: Shiny As always, comments welcome, and please remember to vote!
Please start another thread if you want to talk about that coin. If we talk about it here, it will 100% highjack this thread. Thanks!
I like #1 best ...I don't mind the woody look but it seems distracting on higher grade coins (especially when it is not on copper cents) I'm guessing they all grade the same at MS 66 ...all look fairly clean in the fields; #3 looks to have more hits but the luster likely pushes it into the same grade as the other two (I've noticed that cents sometimes get penalized a grade or two for the woody look but I don't think that happened here)
#1 for me. I like the misty effect because it draws your attention to the memorial. All grade MS-64 IMO.
#3. I like the luster, color, and eye appeal. All three have signs of a weak strike. The one I would own is #3, for color and luster. #1 is a 67 #2 is a 65+ and #3 is a 66+. I like the one with the middle grade, ironically. Added note—for those who do not know Jeffersons well, 1954s is a notoriously weak strike date. These coins are not superbly struck, but are at least average for date. This is a difficult date coin for full hammered strike, IMO.
WOW!! Would they really grade that high? None of them have full steps. I thought that would take them down more in grade!! I'm not at all experienced at this so just asking for clarification! Thanks!!!! Anxious to learn more!!!
I like the overall looks of #1 the most but in all honesty, despite no where near FS I’d take any one of the 3. In fact, I’d take all 3 and I’d still be happy with my purchase.
For the guys who are having trouble understanding why some of the members are grading these so high, here is a comparison coin, this is a PCGS MS66 that I thought would cross to NGC as an MS67, and it came back MS66. At the time I acquired this, I thought it was the most lustrous 54-S I had ever seen. The luster on coin #3 (Shiny) blows this one away.
