I bought a few lots of Mercury Dimes on ebay mostly for the silver but since I had a lot of different dates and mint marks I thought I'd put a book together. Most are 30's and 40's but I did get a few older ones. This one is quite worn but there seems to be a mint mark. Any guesses. Thanks, Mike
I dunno its kinda like a Rorschach test. Sometimes I see an S other times a Swastika. Maybe, its best to make believe there is nothing there. Traci
I was thinking maybe the year of the coin was making me see it as a D but I guess I'm not the only one seeing a D.
Thanks to all who replied. I guess I can sell this coin on ebay for a lot more than I paid for it. I don't remember the auction this dime came in but I was bidding on lots of dimes trying to get them for around $1 each. Back in the late 60's when I was a young my brother and I collected coins but I got away from the hobby by the late 70's although I would still check coins I got in change to see if there was any old ones. I started buying silver coins on ebay this year for the silver value but now I think the collector in me is starting to get into them for the coins. What are my options for getting this coin verified and what would the cost be ? Here is an auction on ebay that has a mint mark no better than mine and look at the price it is up to. I saw another seller that advertised a 21D mercury with a "weak D" that I could not see at all. http://cgi.ebay.com/1916-D-MERCURY-...Q_trkparmsZalgo=MW&its=C&itu=UCC&otn=12&ps=63 Mike
It looks like a D to me. I do live in an area dominated by the D mintmark though. I wonder if the variety collectors have some other place to look for verification?
