1977 Jefferson Nickel Error (What & How much?)

Ok guys, I have an opportunity to purchase this 1977 Jefferson Nickel which looks to me a minor error of some kind, but I don't know what the error is called or how much it is worth. I really just want it because it is a gem grade 1977 that might have full steps.




Any insight into the classification of the error and how much value it adds to the coin would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Small broadstrike /off center i would think around $5-$10.

 

I think it would be a nice piece to add to your Jefferson Series coins. I've found it hard to find high grade specimens from the 70s...during a CRH event. I'd be very happy with that grade, missing half the outer devices.

Misaligned Die Strike on the Obverse.

@potty dollar 1878 It is not a Broadstrike nor Off-Center strike. The Reverse is centered.

Just did a quick search on google, bing & ebay, There's actually quite a few MAD Jeffersons out there but not one of them is listed for more than $15. Now, most of them are circulated so maybe the grade of the one you're looking at would justify a slight premium but I'm not sure...

 

Does a misaligned die strike add any value to the coin? A gem grade 1977 with a standard strike is valued at $5 and gem FS is valued at $50. How much additional should I pay for the error strike?

 

Yes it is FS, but it really doesn't matter because the coin is beat up, won't grade higher than MS62 with those surfaces.

The misaligned die is cool but doesn't really add much value. Might get ya a few extra dollars if you can get it noted on the slab also. Nice one Paul!

Generally, a MAD doesn't add any value. However, yours is a nicer example that has some letters off the planchet. It might add anywhere from $1-$5 to the value for a common BU coin. IMO. Looks cool. I would be in for a buck or 2 for this degree of MAD. For a GEM or FS, I don't think it would add anything, but not positive. Just my thoughts

 

Okay guys, here are my photos of the coin. I am going to submit it to NGC for grading and am expecting MS66, just missing 5FS.

Do it.. Finding a MAD dated 1977 is good.
