That was hilarious, and not in a demeaning way to the teens...they were having fun with it, too! I love how they "reset" the phone with each new attempt at dialing. For some odd reason, I've thought about finding an old rotary phone for my desk - not to use, just to have it sitting there.

I remember the days of rotary phones on a "party line", where you might pick up your handset to make a call, and someone else somewhere down the street was already on a call on the line, and you'd have to hang up and wait for the line to be clear. Try explaining that one to a teen today. My 21-year-old granddaughter says she wishes she grew up when I did. I don't think she'd last a week, but I would really enjoy watching the effort!

As far as coins go, I only have three, but I'm lucky to have a daughter who loves the history behind them and ancient history in general. These are the three I have - common, everyday coins, but I love them for it:

I would've used the analogy of selfies... do you have any hobbies that you just like?
Do your selfies have value or do you just like looking at them...?

It seems that humans tend to think of themselves as the be-all end all of time only to find out that they were only in the Middle passing from one form of imaginary worth to another form of imaginary worthlessness. It is easier to enjoy the ride when you dwell on the moment rather than where you will end up.

Coins are not an investment for the end but to help enjoy the ride. I agree that cash investments in things like stock index funds makes sense for those wishing to postpone the eventual worthlessness of their cash. People used to place faith in real gold but now prefer imaginary crypto-gold which avoids some pitfalls while introducing others. Somewhere above I learned that someone made a lot of money trading sneakers. My question is whether crypto-sneakers smell better than the ones worn during a game. Is there a timeless market for investment grade shoes? Will sneakers have value after no one remembers the feet that gave them their turn in the spotlight? My coins have value to me but that value is not directly translatable into dollars, bitcoins or sneakers.

To Evan: My sequence of middles included one in stamps. Before long I lost interest and sold off the ones that seemed without redeeming interest value. What I kept were the ones that told a story of history. Some of these were attached to the letters that gave them their place in history. Some were envelopes that no longer retain their contents but, like our coins, make us wonder what use they were in their day.

Some will say I became old today; others realize that was a process that started many years ago. Time has no beginning and end - only middles. Socrates had been well positioned in his long lasting middle period for millennia after his hemlock. Our coins stopped being the currency of their day long ago. Now their value is crypto or assigned by the faith placed in them for whatever reason (interest, investment, art appreciation). They will be without value when they are last forgotten. I never met my great great great grandfather who died 149 years before I was born but he lives in my crypto-memory represented by a tintype. Cash value? Not so much.
