I just checked on the status of a recent submission and it says current wait times for US Economy is 53 days! Has anyone seen it get this bad? Isn't economy usually supposed to be 24 working days? I can't imagine what it looks like there right now. They say they're hiring in all departments. They say they're working 7 days a week.

So if you want a coin graded, you can ship it down there, pay the $22 plus fees and shipping. It'll sit in their P.O. box at the building for weeks until it is actually opened and accepted and then there's a nearly 3 month turn around time to get it graded because weekends don't count.

Should we revisit "The hobby is dying" claim?

It’s really slow all over. Just be happy you aren’t into cards where PSA had to stop submissions they were so behind with the insane volume.

Wouldn’t the wait time seem to indicate that the hobby is thriving?

Yes. You just see people on forums and hear people on podcasts complaining that the hobby is dying out. Where are they now? Many if not most indicators would point to it thriving today. I wish it wasn't so things I wanted were cheaper!

TPGs don't define the numismatic hobby ;)
You can collect things other than graded.

The hobby is growing but heading towards being even more of a cashgrab.

I've been seeing lots of full-page ads offering sign-on cash incentives, and enticing applicants with opportunities to "travel the world!" 20210504_204358.jpg

Looks like they're looking for all tiers: entry level, specialist, and management positions. You should apply! You get to travel the world!

I haven't had any problems at all submitting to PCGS, in fact, my last submission I've already got back.

Actually, it is not slow all over. It is just extremely slow at NGC & PCGS. We have dealers who send coins in, get them back, list them, and sell them long before folks using the big two even get a message that their coins are in QC. I'll bet the "little collector" is getting the slow boat treatment over there. What big dealer is going to wait over three weeks for their coins? ;)

Help wanted is just about everywhere you look but a strong number of people would rather stay home and collect that unemployment check than work for it.

Sorry, it's slow at the first tier TPGs and that includes things other than coins such as cards.

Go over to the Trading Card Forum at Collectors Universe. 53 days? That's
a brief moment in time. Collectors over there have waited for 365+ days.
PSA has cut off submissions until July. At this point in time the coin collecting
world is very small potatoes compared to the Trading Card market in the
TPG world. In a year or two things will start to get back to normal.

Because I do believe we have made the cost of this hobby dangerously high.
