Post a coin that you owned, but regret selling it.

Ok, I will start off. Here is an 1878 s Trade Dollar NGC AU 58, that I sold in my big toner sale in 2015. I really liked the coin, for its eye appeal, toning, and overall enjoyment of ownership.

I was hard up for cash and sold a beautiful 1911 $2.50 Indian Gold Piece .

Ouch. Those don't show up every day.

 

None that I regret selling. Every coin I've ever sold was worth more to someone else than it was to me otherwise I wouldn't have parted with it.

Now, OTH, there are a few coins in my collection that I regret NOT selling at one time or another--since letting them go would have freed up funds for something else.

 

My mom and dad (when he was alive) found one just like this when reupholstering a Victorian style couch. Gave it to me and it went away along with the rest of my silver hoard at that time when the Hunt Brothers cornered the market. Don't miss the coin per se, it's that my parents found it and passed it to me. Still have the fond memory of their discovery though (sigh).

 

I've had several coins that I wish I'd have been able to keep (I did very well when I sold them, but the only reason I sold them in the first place is because I needed the money.) Now that I am somewhat more financially stable - after making a plan and sticking to it for a few years - I wish I still had them. (This doesn't mean I'd want to buy them back for what I got for them, though, haha...)

Two such coins I sold after I'd learned (I suppose) to take decent images:

Now, before I learned how to image coins halfway decently, I had a group of MS66-67 Indian Head Cents I picked up at a flea market for under a quarter each. They were residing in one of those cheap paper Whitman folders (the kind that commonly turns copper cents greenish/gray and then corrodes them) so I believe I "rescued" them. They were absolutely gorgeous coins and would have made a really, really nice start to a full set...but again, bills had to be paid and I made a responsible decision to part with almost all of my collection at the time.

The funny part of that story is that I actually took them (already graded) to one local coin shop and the owner offered me a few bucks each on them because they "weren't something he could move all that easily." I should have known that's the offer I'd receive when I saw his trays were full of literal pocket change labelled like whoever had done it was in the middle of a Friday night bender...

I don't regret a lot of the coins I've "re-homed" - but this bunch I absolutely would love to still have in my collection.​

 

My second most Coin to sell is a 1795 Liberty Cap that I found Metal Detecting !! I thought it would at least go for $100 but only sold for $58 .

don't even have the picture any longer but "had" an 1877-CC Trade Dollar; used in trade for some high quality paper money at a Memphis IPMS.

 

Well, aside from not being able to take/post pics, I have a rather unique personal policy, to wit: when I sell or otherwise part with any coin that I have pics of, but esp if a particularly nice one, I destroy/delete any pics of it..."out of sight, out of mind"...so as not to tempt regret by retaining the ability to see/return to it again. It works best for me.

 

Well, having never sold a coin, I don't qualify to play . (I have given coins away over the years, but no regrets there.)

But...I will say I believe I acquired at least several that some people regret getting rid of....

 

I have never regretted selling a coin. There's always another one, and I don't have to own them all at the same time.

That said, there are a couple that my mom gave me as a kid that started me collecting coins. I have not sold those and probably never will.

 

For the most part I don't regret selling coins (had a good reason and/or it allowed me to buy something else). There are a few that I recall fondly.

One is a French Indo China Piastre with some of the best color I've seen for that coin.

Another is a toned Morgan with a cool pattern. I sold this one at a show in 2017. The market wasn't as hot then as now and I figured I would find better examples for around the same amount. I have picked up nicer ones since but still remember this one.

I sold all of my Morgan CC mint and wish I had kept them now!

 

This was graded MS-64+. Sold a couple years ago. I probably should have kept it but what I bought with the funds has increased in value more than the coin and I use it more so not too upset. Haven't sold any since but often wish I still had it.

 

Oh man, that's a rarer type II as well. There wasn't enough silver in that to warrant selling even at $50. That's a bummer.

 

In 1953, I bought a very nice 1909 VDB cent for $0.75 and while showing it off, someone offered me $1.00 and I sold it...still remember.
