Had a pretty good year with finding error bills. Earlier in the year I found two $20 bills with mismatched serial numbers and two $20 bills one with a dropped digit and one with a missing digit.

Today, I found my first $10 bill with mismatched serial numbers. It's in pretty good shape but has some handling ripples and two bumped corners.

I don't really know if that is something that can be determined accurately. On the Canadian Paper Money Forum, one of the volunteers undertook a project, after a few $20 mismatched serial numbers bills were found with the same prefix, to figure out in what position or positions on the sheets the error was occurring based on the front and back plate numbers and whether this was occurring on subsequent sheets. I don't think there were enough bills found to come to a conclusion.

Regardless of what denomination the bill is, the value (in mint condition) is $450 Canadian for a single digit mismatch. It goes higher if there are more mismatching digits.

I know of some collectors who have been searching for years and have never found one either in stacks or change. I consider myself very fortunate.

Wow, I remember when you found the 20s. Congrats! That is amazing. Gonna start strap searching like crazy when I get home for Christmas.

Very nice find are these as highly collected and valued in Canada as they are in the U.S. ?

I would say so. I sold the first one ($20 mismatch) shortly after finding it to a local collector who offered me more than the catalog value just to own one. Each time I've posted one of my finds I get several emails to encourage me to sell. I've been hanging onto these and the other errors I've come across for my own collection since I realized there aren't that many out there. I've seen a few on ebay and a couple of other auction sites but almost all of those I was aware of before seeing them up for sale through posts on the forums I belong to.

Earlier Canadian error bills are commanding some pretty high prices.

i have search a ton of US notes, not as much as urban lol but alot for me :D and have never found anything like this. I see topics from alot of countries like Canada and over seas with notes like this found .... i wonder why it happens so much with other countries... especially when the US prints more notes then most other countries combined.....

does it happen as often or more in the US but just not as publicized?

When I first got into collecting bills, it was for radars and fancy serial numbers. I had never thought it possible for a mismatched serial number to occur because I had just always imagined that the system that printed the numbers would never allow it to happen. Then when I began searching the auction sites and saw mismatched serial numbers (on U.S. currency) it blew me away. The majority of them were from the U.S. but I did see a couple from other countries.

Eventually, I purchased a catalog for Canadian paper money and there was a whole section of "error" bills. This fascinated me so I've been on the lookout for them. I have several different errors, most of them collected in the last few months. I have friends that handle a lot of currency and have never thought to look at the serial numbers.

The three mismatched serial numbers bills that I have found have been from change received at the grocery stores. The other errors I found at work (I do the cash each morning). I think the errors are out there, it's just a matter of making oneself perceptive to them.
