I have two coin shops here in Boise that I like..
Rosehill Coin is the large one.. very clean and huge stock.. They deal well with loyal customers and have fair prices... But the other.. Geeezee..
I need to see if he would let me get a picture.. it is nuts.. I have no clue as to how he keeps any clue of stock..
It looks like a house in a downtown area converted to a business, A small one story one room house.. He has the door locked and always has a gun on his hip.. he will buzz me in to see piles and piles of coins.. boxes on the floor everywhere loaded with coins.. The Desk is a huge mess.. HUGE.. All tables are piles of just Stuff.. Coins .. Silver .. Gold.. It is like a ( Oh god I hope He is not a site member ) insane coin hoarder that we all wish to be.. but the level of it shows how out of hand it can get..
I love it.. but always feel a bit like I am not welcome.. Like I am in His world and He just wants to be alone with his coins.. He is always looking at them., But I don't see anything getting more organized.. Just moved.. and moved..
I have never seen anything like it.. I just want to dive into the boxes.. Just Dive right in..
I went in the other week and got 100.00 in Junk silver .. Just wanted some quarters.. some dimes.. whatever, He handed me some nice AU 1964 Quarters.. Not bad.. and some other nice Mercs Etc. ..
I have to say.. I like what I got...
Anyone else ever see a Dealer like this.. He has been In Meridian Idaho forever.. Great Guy.. Just .. Odd.

I was just thinking about the software Post and organization,, And My mess.. I can't Find My Penny!! That Silly No date Penny I found the other day... AArrggg.. What did I do With It??

I'll bet he's more organized than you think...

In my neck of the woods, there is a locally famous music store. There are literally thousands of CDs in the "back building" including stacks of them in what does not seem to be any order at all.

Yet ask for a specific item by a specific artist, and it's in your hand in no time flat.

You may be more correct than you think. It appears that with a high degree of intelligence, sometimes comes very little sence of organization.
I've worked with numerous Engineers in the Nuclear industry and seldom, if ever found a desk, bookcase, filing cabinet that didn't look like it just was in a Nuclear explosion. Yet mention a report on something and POOF, they hand it to you. On most construction sites the lead Engineering office even looks worse and they too can find anything they or you need or want.
One of the main reasons people invented secretaries, filing clerks, assistants.

    Does he negotiate?

I visited a store this very morning which I think is the local crack addict pawn shop, a poker parlor to the left, cigarette shop to the right (not that I have anything against smoking, except homeless people trying to bum cigarettes), and two bars all in one strip. I thought I was going to die just trying to buy a few 2x2s. They guy was wearing about $20,000 in gold jewelry. He had a gold necklace about as thick as a tug boat rope. Most of the stuff looked hot (as in stolen), and junkie. Truthfully, most of my own collection (if not all) is higher quality. I also think I have more experience than the guy.

    But?
He liked to talk coins--and was interesting; Wanted to see a few of my coins.
Didn't get offended if I didn't want to buy what he had?
I buy 1/2 and large cents. He had pile of morgans-- not much interested.

My desk sounds like a microcosm of his shop...I am constantly moving coins here and there... and then every once and a while I get annoyed and pack them up and either put them in the case or a box.

I love it there,, I would recommend stopping by if in Meridian Idaho.. The only shop in town.. He has some order to the stuff in the draws and under the glass on a couple counters .. but everything else.. Wow.. So cool.. Like a dream I had once.

    Lather,

I work in that shop except it's in Indiana.

Total chaos to the eye but believe me we know where the "good stuff" is. A cluttered shop is a busy shop. A busy shop has character and characters.

I was a customer there for years and now work the other side of the counter. I know what a lot of my regulars collect and when I see something they may be interested in I set it aside for them.

I have little "piles" and "niches" about the store for certain people. Some know where their "area" is. Heck, used to be one for me when I was a customer and I know who "took it over". Still got my little area as well.

A neat store is fine but I don't think I could work at one. Last summer my boss did a trade with a pawn shop in the next town. I took our stuff over to do the trade. His counters were immaculate, everything labeled.
We did our trade and I told him to put some stuff on the counter as it was too sterile. We both laughed about it because he knows where I work.

    I like cluttered shops. :)

I like his too.. And when I do ask for a coin he knows where to look.. Only once did he fail to find it. I don't like the gun.. but understand... And am not foolish enough to believe that every coin shop I have ever been in has a gun or Ten around.. It is just a bit wild west on his side.. But I am in Idaho..
I could easily see myself becoming one with a shop like that.. Look at my profile picture.. That was after my first year and a half of collecting.. I still think I know what I have but then find a forgotten purchase and .. Oh Ya.. Cool .. Like A gift to myself.. I found this one today.. forgot all about it.. It was mixed in a folder of Communist Coins... Its a proof .. Scanner makes it look crummy

Coin looks good to me as I understand scanning proofs.

The gun thing - we have them scattered around the store but not in view of the public. You can actually see the police station from the store but that isn't much help in an armed robbery so it's an unfortunate necessity. Occasionally the boss will strap one on in full view of customers to "send a message".

We're not in the "Wild West" but we are just a few miles from Gary, IN. Happens to be one of the highest per capita murder cities in the nation on a very regular basis.
We also have "codes" if we think something is wrong. Luckily I've never used one yet and in 42 years my boss has never been held up but you have to realize it's alwasys possible in this business.

Gary, Indiana? I thought you guys had marching bands streaming through the downtown streets on a daily basis, playing music from "The Music Man!"

Yes - there is a local shop like that here in Ky. The display for coins is about 10 feet long and has maybe 100 coins in it priced. Other that that they have stacks of stuff sitting everywhere - mostly junk silver piles can be seen. It seems like if you ask they might have a dansco album you can look through. The back counter - probably twice as long is filled with maybe new proof sets, plated stuff. Just thinking about it I won't visit again. The shop I like has clean counters with coins displayed nicely - now behind the counters is different. There you can see stuff starting to stack on the desk, but it is manageable. I doubt I will visit the other store again.

I have a coin shop just like that where I live, and go to it often because its only 10 minutes away from where I live vs 25 minutes for the next big shop

When a coin shop looks like this, inside and out, I KNOW it's a going to be a damn good place to visit.

All the good coin shops that I've visited seem to give this same impression.
