Last week, i decided enough was enough. It was time to create a typeset that will take 5+ years to accumulate. My goal is to slowly acquire a very nice set of coins that I can hold for a lifetime.

Enough with my story, here is what I bought today.

Ive been looking for some subtle color that will accent my others in my collection.

Two nice additions. Like the nickel the best.

I dig the ASE, but the color scheme on the Jefferson is very unusual. Can you post larger photos of the war nickel before I give my opinion?

This is exactly how it looks in hand Paul. Your opinion is very valuable.

    Okay,

Here it is! The coin has a very nice strike and it would not surprise me if it is full step nickel. In addition it appears to have gem surfaces from the photos. However, I find the toning to be rather homely by war nickel standards. Although the pattern and color scheme are unusual, they are just not my cup of tea. But that is the great thing about toned coins. It doesn't matter if I like the coin, it only matters if you like the coin. I can't even list all of the toned coins that I have liked that others thought were butt ugly. A Connecticut commemorative from a recent auction comes to mind.

Mike (Leadfoot) thought I was kidding when I described this coin as beautiful.

These coins are a good start to your type set. Good luck and stick with it.

    Thanks Paul,

I'm not much of a "exciting" man, so a "homely" tone is just what I'm looking for! As far as the granular look to it, it seems to be consistent through the coin. Could this be similar to the "Woody" pennies that we see so often?

Very nice coins and a great start on your type set. Best of luck with the set. Are you going strictly 20th Century?
