Hi: I was wondeing if coin collection software is a good idea. I like the idea of having everything cataloged with access to current value changes but not sure I want my entire collection information available to some hacker or potential thief either. Anybody know where I can buy a "cheap" download? The ones I've seen thru google search are expensive. There's one on ebay for $19.99 that looks interesting. Anybody ever use it/try it? Thanks for your input as usual guys.:headbang:
I use Coin Manage and Currency Manage and love the both of them I downloaded the two for around $60. You can just get one of them if you like. It has good reporting software, brings in the coin values, lets you post a picture with the coin, prints a want list with the values and a bunch of other stuff. I have been very happy. It's great to have everything inventoried. You can also dump all the info to a spreadsheet, which I do sometimes so I can make my own analysis. You can't go wrong.
CoinManage (I also use CurrencyManage and StampManage) are great software programs, they are the best that I have seen and I would highly recommend!
I just put whatever I want about my collection into an excel worksheet. Can customize it anyway I want to and could even link it to the internet to automatically update with price guides if I wanted to do so. If you have certified coin, register them with the PCGS and/or NGC set registries as they each do a decent job of keeping your collection managed.
As noted I too use Excel. If you have Microsoft Office, Excel is included and then you don't have to buy anything. Note that if you use a program you purchase, it will not usually be usable on other computers. This means your stuck with only seeing, modifying, etc your info on one computer. If you go anywhere on Earth, Excel is probably available. However, in China Excel is in Chinese so you'ld have to learn that. Not sure but I think Excel in Mexico is in Spanish.
Google Docs has a spreadsheet tool that you use online. Since it's all stored on Google, you can access your spreadsheet from any computer with a browser (unless your browser is really ancient). I believe that it also supports some of the simpler sorts of calculations and can be exported to Excel. The main limitation is that you have to be online.
Coin Elite. Have used it for many years. Even before Windows came out. It will do most anything without all the work of Excel.
If I get another laptop, which I will my Coin Manage 2009 should transfer over. I should just have to download another copy and enter in the registration key code which I paid for. In the wors case it does not work and I have to buy another copy, I think I can spare the $60 or what ever it cost. Obvioulsy it's to each their own. If a person does not know Excel so well then an "in can" program would be the way to go. I'm pretty good with spreadsheets and even Access, but I like the tailored program of coin manage.
Just remember that anything you have stored on line is always a possible target for hackers. So many say it can't happen but so far I've known two people that almost lost thier bank accounts by using on line banking. Also, several people I know have had extensive problems with credit card frauds on line. As long as you think your safe, no problems. Maybe.
For Excel you could always just call the Video Professor that advertises on TV that he will send you a CD on any program you say for FREE. Never tried it but nothing to loose. I guess the gimmick is if you try one you'll buy more. Also, there are many books on how to use Excel. And if you know anyone in a company that has an office, they could always help with Excel. I use people I know in offices all the time for stuff like that.
I'm in the process of converting over to Collector's Assistant. You can export the database from Excel where I was and still am keeping my collection until the completion of the conversion. I really like the fact that you can get updates on the coin value using various value forums and also attach photos. When I have to add new coins, it is really nice because it allows you to select the coin, year, and its grade and then it automatically fills in the other stuff like mintage, value, material of construction, designer, etc. It also has a pretty large photo library with the various pics of varieties, etc. It costs about $60 but I got it for free. My daughters, bless their little hearts, bought it for me for my birthday.
Sounds just like Coin Manage. Same price level. Good present from the kids. I asked for some intercept albums. One other thing I like about these software programs, I find myself at work or on the road running the program and looking at the pictures, or various reports. It's almost like having your collection with you.
I cannot say thank you enough! You guys really are great! Can't wait to get started. I think just pulling them out of their safes and seeing them again will be a thrill all by itself. Can't wait to see what surprises are in store for me. As a little kid my local dealer told me always buy the best you can afford and I never forgot that advice. That was 40 some years ago.
Here is a list of products I compiled a while back when looking into this. I am sure some are mentioned in the thread, but hope this helps. http://www.coin-collecting-guide-for-beginners.com/coin-collecting-software.html http://www.trovesoftware.com/ http://www.carlisledevelopment.com/coinHobbysoftUpgrade.php http://www.libertystreet.com/ http://www.datavillage.com/CoinTracker.htm http://www.pcvu.com/ezcoin/coin-collecting-software.html http://download.cnet.com/NumisEXPERT-Collector/3000-2067_4-10566697.html http://www.tabberer.com/sandyknoll/more/coin/index.html http://www.dataxm.com/vccintro.html
If I invested a lot of time in developing a spreadsheet, I would also lean that way. That's exactly what I did not want to do..and I am a spreadsheet fanantic.
I downloaded the 30 day ver. of Coin Manage 2009.. free for 30 then need reg. but Wow.. It looks cool but the prices it quotes are NUTS! 7,000 For a PF65 1880 P Morgan.. Nice Pictures and info.. and connects to PCGS .. Not to bad.. The Pirate in me says find a SN since Copyright infringment is your greatest entertainment value. .. Bad.. Kidding.. I like my Karma
