One of my co-workers knows how passionate I am about coins and has been saying for three years that she was bringing the coins that her momma left for me to evaluate for her.... Well, today was that day and by and large she has a bag of melt silver..... And then I spotted this..... Alas, the world will never know....

@Randy Abercrombie Even better, put it on Etsy as possible 16D with a one of a kind Mint error. At least $10 K.

This is one of those deals that if only a coin could talk.... A square hole is odd.... But the placement of that square hold just makes you have to wonder what somebody's intention was.

False intentions? Hmmm Mystery coin might be better words to pick. Just saying. But hey, I’m a newbie

Because a 1916-D Mercury dime is worth at least $1,500 in average circulated condition (and 10 times that much in mint state), but we will never know if this coin is indeed the much sought after 1916-D because of that very unfortunate hole right where the mintmark was :( :(

Looks like using a square punch to hang from necklace. Think about it, a mercury dime would be a very pretty pendant for a little girl or young woman on a silver chain.

My example of this was my next door neighbor metal detecting. He found a cent once, and saw the date, 1909. Then he saw the S. He flipped it over, rubbed between the wheat ears, and saw a VDB. Then he finished cleaning the dirt off and found an attempt of a punch hole right above lincoln. Someone years ago tried to make a hole and got about 70% done and gave up ....... on a 1909 S VDB. :( The coins was a very pretty green AU, (I am sure "details" even without hole due to modern collectors hating any coin that has been buried). The green patina made it the prettiest S VDB I have ever seen, (save for the hole).

The real question here is, can you put a round peg in a square hole?:D

I can solve your square hole mystery. It was hammered with a nail way back in the day.

True. I should have thought of square nails. I actually have a bin full of new old stock ones from an old hardware store auction. I bought them maybe 30 years ago, they are "new in box" from around 1910 or so.

Edit: Dang, that feels weird. Being able to just throw out I did something 30 or 40 years ago just makes a man feel old.

That completes the picture. Now if I could only coax some Denver DNA out of this silver......

If it was associated with a murder the folks at NCIS could find where it was made.
