Evening, Trying to learn visuals and grading a bit - Can someone give me a 'ballpark' ( or better ) Grade and Value on this 1906 Indian Head Cent? It is obviously VERY dirty ,but LIBERTY is fully visible and most details seem fairly sharp. Is it beyond "fooling with"? If not, what would you do? Mike ps: This is the first coin from my 35 yr. old 20th Century Type Set.
I agree, leave it alone. I've seen alot dirtier ihc's than that one. It's worth $2 to $3 unless you sell on ebay then anything goes and all bets are off!
Thank You all for your astute observation and candid responses. I had it at VG-8 / F-12 ( might be pushing it ) and was not planning on doing anything to it. Value, by the book, is at $3. Does the dirty look in these huge scans ( compared to 'in-hand' ) keep it from grading higher or is it not considered? The coin does not look as bad in-hand even under 10X. Mike
The details contribute more to the grade. Your coin would grade whatever it grades, due to the details left on the coin.
I'll say VF25 or so. Here's some graded examples to compare with: http://tinyurl.com/bbzy8y Please note that the strike of a 1908-S is generally a little weaker than the 1906 so the grading standard can be a little different as well, but on a VF coin it shouldn't account for too much of a difference.
Thanks illini420, :thumb: I did not think it would grade that high - but I like it. Totally forgot about your grading pages and links ( I had them bookmarked for months now ). I see now what you mean. Gorgeous 1909 mint set, by the way. And your IHC set helped alot - AGAIN!! Mike
I recommend this for grading http://www.indiancent.com/grading.pdf. Yes to me sometimes pictures will result in lower grades based on what people see. And no offense to illini, but I would not use that grading set - 1908 is know for weak strike and my personal belief is that key dates like this get bumped. So the two combined make it tough and not sure I would try comparing non-key dates to it. Just my opinion.
Looks like a solid VF-20 to me and PLEASE do not try and clean it. There is nothing wrong with dirty coins, only dirty people!
hiho, My thoughts exactly - on ALL your points. Was only wondering about the Huge scans and photos seen on this forum and other sites. We all just 'see' so much more. One of those times here when I think "Dirt is Noble". Well, onto the next coin in the set... Mike
