Official Counterfeit Bill Notice

Discussion in 'Paper Money' started by Joey from Da Bronx, Apr 26, 2021.

  1. Back in the 1950s and 1960s my father owned Nereid Bake Shop at East 238th Street in The Bronx (AKA Da Bronx). My mother handled all the finances and paperwork that went along with it. This included depositing all the cash once a week at the bank (the workers were paid in cash), and I sometimes went along with her. It was usually quite a stack of bills (no credit cards were accepted at the store), and when we were at the teller's window and he was manually counting it all, Mom would say to the person behind her, "You may want to go to another window. I'll be here for quite a while".
Anyway, when Mom passed away a few years ago, it was up to me and my sisters to sort through her belongings. Mom liked to save everything. When she passed in 2015 we found tax returns from the early 1950s. We also found the attached paperwork. It's an official Secret Service Counterfeit Note Report. I've never seen one before. I wasn't collecting currency back then, but in later years I would check the bills before she brought them to the bank. Wish I knew then what I know now!

    scottishmoney Buh bye

I had no idea they gave that to the depositor. I got a counterfeit $100 back in 2008 from a bank and handed it right back to the teller. She started slashing at it with one of those stupid detector pens and insisted it was real - then I asked her to hold it up to the light - Abraham Lincoln was in the watermark, not Ben Franklin. It was a real $5 that had been bleached and reprinted with the $100 details.

Of course I won't. I get anxious the police will catch me jaywalking. I have zero criminal instinct. Lol!

I really do love the family bake shop business. Very awesome. My great-grandfather had a wartime Lithuanian bakery. The sign owner misspelled his first and last name on the sign. So it was the Saltus bakery.. Lol!

How I wish I could experience such small joys.

My brother found a counterfeit $20 and sent it to me. It’s actually pretty convincing and one of these three.

I don't do notes but the 2009 in the center looks odd to me. The COlor of the paper looks off.

I agree. It seems the middle one is a little off...
I'm focusing on the lines on Jacksons forehead.

It is the middle note. If you had a handful of $20s and you were counting them, you would easily miss this note if you weren’t paying close attention.

And the seal on the right? Forgive me if im just note illiterate but it does seem to be further rightward than the other two.

Yes, the seal is in a different location. I totally missed this!
If I were shuffling these through my hands to count them, I can almost guarantee I would miss it.

The seal is well within BEP guidelines. However, the center bill looks like it might be counterfeit.

masterswimmer A Caretaker, can't take it with me

I did pick the middle note before your reveal.
I have a question though. Since you have the counterfeit in hand, can you feel the difference in the paper? Is there some discernable tactile sensation that you could feel if your eyes were closed?
