1941 S Large/Small MM Jefferson

These look lake one is small and one large but the coins are so worn..
Can someone tell me what one is Small and Large?? Thanks..
And the value is higher on the???

from the pictures I can only say that it does not appear to be different sized MM's.

It would more likely be the difference in the strength of the die maker's strength in punching in the MM.

 

Here is an example of a small vs large mintmark.

The short story: I submitted it to Coin World Clearing House as a new variety.
The 1916S Regular and micro Mintmarks.

Good old Eric Von Klinger replied, nothing there.

Years later, Collector's Clearing House Announced: 1916 S large & small Mintmarks discovered.

Oh well, at least Klinger is gone.

look at the distance of the MM from the rim. That is the easiest way to see the difference in the size.

I didn't need to hear this :crying:
I'm putting together a birthyear set (you guessed it, 1941) and if there are two recognized mintmark sizes on the nickel, that just added another coin I have to find and buy :headbang:

I'm going to have to look more closely at what other varieties for all the 1941 coins exist.
I knew about the "AW"/"No AW" varieties for the proof halves.
Maybe I can turn this into my first research project. And in the future maybe end up as a footnote in someone else's broader research.

The two nickels pictured the Large "S" is on the left and the small on the right. the rarer of the two being the small "S" This variety is extremely difficult to locate in any grade. AU 50 @ $25. MS-63 @ $75. MS-65 @ $125. There is also a repunch MM the secondary s is south of the primary S This is a large "S" variety Most value is for the RPM Lg "S" MM. Then I know we really going to need another box of Kleenx for a certain member .....:bigeyes: yet another 1941-S Inverted MM normaly the sm. "S" variety. OH and did I mention the 1941-D repunched MM? secondary D is southeast of the primary. Just wanted to add to the supense!:goofer:

For what it's worth - I'm pretty sure both of yours are the same MM - Small S - but you can be a better judge of that yourself once you see the thread I linked to.

While the pic's aren't the best, they do show you good enough to be able to see the differances. I wish coin variety books would tell the same info rather than just post 2 pictures as it is harder to see what is different if you don't know what to look for!

Lather, if you really wanna drive yourself nuts. Get one of these 1930's era binocular microscopes. Mine is 12X. just enough magnification that after awhile your coins are like a Rorschach test. Spacey Traci :bigeyes:

 

Awesome.. That is funny, I was going to ask today what might be a good microscope .. I need a better loop and mine being on 10x .. I think I am ready to move up.. And I like the Vintage stuff.. That is Cool..

 

funky I collect antique microscopes my oldest is from 1840. my total collection is 9 now. My spouse made me slow down, because they took up too much room. Soooo, I went back to my childhood hobby coin collecting. LOL now she misses the microscopes. Traci
