Found this coin today and wanted to know if this is an example of PMD. The area is on the reverse of the coin where the word "UNITED" is. If it is an error, I would like to know what kind of error it is. Thank you!
I think it’s an error. Look closely at the rim. On the rim just above the E appears to be an upside down A. It also looks like the cross on the top of the T is also upside down and on the rim. This gives me the impression that it’s a double strike and the AT is from STATES. The curved and displaced metal on the area would be normal. It’s not sharp for something that hit the coin but smooth like it would be from a rim impression. Please take a second look and correct me if I’m mistaken. This could easily be overlooked. @paddyman98 Please take a second look and provide comments to support damage or error. Thanks Paddy.
@Collecting Nut TED of UNITED is smashed. A double strike would produce a different effect. More like a Brockage. The incused (not upraised rim) is obvious.
I'm going with @Collecting Nut on this one, I took the liberty of sharpening the original pic and drawing around the edges of the letters 'A' & 'T' (As in 'STATES') in red. Pareidolia? I'm not convinced that it is that, I think this is a legit error...
Thanks @William F I just can’t shake the feeling I have and what I see so I’m not convinced that this is damaged. It’s the rim on the (I’ll call it the) first strike. That’s for the overlay as I can’t do that at present. Your overlays make my case stronger as I see it. I can only state what I see and how I feel.
Also, I understand what Paddy is saying but I can’t help but feel this is an error. I may be wrong as I am human.
I may be wrong as well and I'm willing to admit that but I can't just let something like this pass without questioning it... 99.9% of the time, it's obviously PMD but I can't go with the flow on this one as I'm just not sure...
All I can say is it appears to be raised to me. But I’ve gotten that wrong many times. The coin has not circulated enough to be worn and I see no sharp edges in that groove.
@Fred Weinberg ? Although I don't think it's a mint error (too many questions about it being double struck) It's refreshing to see things questioned and debated.
Well it’s morning and to me it still looks like it did last night. I did remember one thing as I crawled into bed last night and that was based on this comment. When I took my drivers ed in 1970 I was 16. I passed and been at it ever since. I’ve driven almost everywhere in the US and across country over 15 times. The thing is in 1970 and in high school we were required to take some test prior to getting into the program. I was fine until I took the depth perception test. I almost failed it. To this day I still have problems with depth perception. On coins, that has become a problem with the incluse design. The circulating coins with an incluse design look raised to me in photos and sometimes in hand.
