I just bought a 2006 San Fransisco Mint Commemorative dollar on eBay and suspect it may be a fake. Not sure if anyone one else here has one and can compare to the description of mine, but the reason I think it may be fake is that it doesn't have a shiny surface like my other uncirculated commemoratives, it has more of a soapy appearance. Also it feels lighter in weight, but this may be my paranoia so I'm going to put it on a scale to make sure. I appreciate any help or advice anyone can provide. Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!
Only way to get an opinion is to post some pics. Maybe you can just post the sellers pics, I don't know.
Business Strike Proof Now you need to ask yourself: "Why on earth would anybody counterfeit a 2006 San Francisco Commemorative?" The coin simply isn't that popular and can be had for just a bit over melt.
Uh, in case you missed it, the Chinese are counterfeiting even 1921 Morgans, I saw more than a few in various degrees of accuracy while in China.
Here's the link to the page on ebay for the coin I bought that has pictures. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...672117&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_500wt_1182 I agree that it's probably not a very popular coin to be counterfeit, but something just doesn't look right. I did end up weighing it and it turned out to be the correct weight, so I'm guessing its ok. Thanks for all the posts so far. Any further thoughts?
Just by looking at the auction photo's I can tell you that the coin is ok. Folks need to lighten up with all this counterfeiting baloney since the counterfeits that DO come out of China are obvious counterfeits and they aren't modern commemoratives. Let me put it a little differently. Counterfeiters do it to make money and there is no money to be made in modern commemoratives that have little value even when they are legitimate.
