i am starting my new job today (hopefully) so i'm sitting here waiting. i own a semi, and i've got to wait for tests to come back. Anywho i went to the gas station to get me something to drink. i'm paying and i noticed they had two tens tapped to the wall. i go over and i take a closer look and they got fake tens. the one was a 1959B star note. i thought that was kinda odd. Anybody else got interesting stories like that?

See if they will trade you $10.00 for the counterfeit.

There are people who collect counterfeits (albeit surreptitiously). And a counterfeit star note? Are you kidding? I would think the counterfeit collectors would pay more than $10.00 for that note.

This assumes it is actually a counterfeit. It is also possible that it did not pass the "yellow pen test" which will show genuine earlier notes as "counterfeit".

I also assume you mean 1950B not 1959B.

That's assuming that you are willing to commit crimes of possessing and distributing counterfeit money.

Please Know that I understand the whole ethic thing on Selling a Fake AS real.. Bad.. Very Very Bad, But as for knowing your buying a fake and want a fake.. is it still a crime to buy? Is it a crime even to possess such an item? I only ask since I ran into some 1930's (?Flooded the market with fakes in the 20's and 30's I think?) Chinese Fake Trade Dollars that were not stamped as fake or Replica.. I got them free .. but there was a time when I thought about collecting counterfeit items.. Historical fraud items.. etc..
    Is that bad?

I would keep them.. your kinda stuck with them I think.. As I am with these

I may be wrong on this but I think it is not illegal to own counterfeit money (in the USA), but it is illegal to pass it.

Is there any size stipulated that a REPLICA, or COPY must be on a coin?

Some of them could very easily be doctored, fake toned, etc. to cover.

    Such as eBay 110460636171

I cannot answer this question but I too would like to know the answer.

I have technical education and in many (if not most) occasions when I try to use simple logic in legal areas I am wrong. So let’s apply simple logic here (an probably be wrong). I do know for sure that you must surrender counterfeit money to police (that’s my basis, if I’m wrong here then it’s the end of the story). If you know that you posses some counterfeit money and not intend to surrender it to the police then you DO something that is directly opposite to what you must do, that is you break a law. That should be illegal. Of course, they have to prove that you didn’t intend to march to the police department to get rid of the counterfeits right before they read you your rights but it’s for the court.

I know the Law says Coins MUST be Stamped as "copy" or "replica".. But Not size as far as I know..
And yes it would be hard to prosecute you for simple holding such an item..
But as a historical item.. we should be able to collect.

I bet that 1950B is not a fake and was only identified as a fake using the pen which is no good for notes that old - in ef40 the lowest value is $50 and double that if it is from Minneapolis.

This is from US Secret Service site http://www.secretservice.gov/money_law.shtml

    -----
Possession of counterfeit United States obligations with fraudulent intent is a violation of Title 18, Section 472 of the United States Code and is punishable by a fine or imprisonment for up to 15 years, or both.
    -----

I guess it comes to the definition of "fraudulent intent".

You are missing the point. Whether it is illegal or not, there are people who collect counterfeit US notes. And they are willing to pay good money for bad.

I suspect the note in question is not counterfeit but did not pass the counterfeit pen test because of when it was printed. Some older notes will come up as "counterfeit" when they are really genuine when using the pens.

The word COPY is a requirement of the Hobby Protection Act, not the counterfeiting laws.

They made 720,000 stars. This was a low number with 00 to start with. i went in and took another look, i dont think it was fake. but they did write "fake" across it in marker. Two corners tore off. What a shame, but they did have another ten from 2004 that was a fake. Didn't have the hologram on it.

No, your point was heard well and I tried to point that in might be illigal to do business with these people.

Actually I don't think you can collect fakes at all, I mean legally. We've covered this area a number of times. That said, I will gladly take one of those Trade dollars off your hands. :D

Here is a question.. if you go to the link.. it states "altering genuine currency to increase its value is a violation",....
What about those fools who deface quarters in gold electroplate and then sell on HSN for "increase" in Value??
I am calling the Feds!! I hate those guys.. Wait.. not the Feds.. the HSN guys..
Side note.. I have a guy at work who knows I like coins and brags about his HSN Quarter set in Platinum and gold.. I just don't have the heart to tell him they suck.
