I just want to give CT members a heads-up regarding shipments from Germany to the US by Deutsche Post. April 20, 2021 "Merchandise shipments for private customers: Depending on the availability of transport capacity, we reserve the right to ship USA-bound parcels (Päckchen and Paket) without Premium service via ocean freight until further notice. These items can only be franked online and may be subject to very lengthy transit times of up to 60 days. For destinations in the western US or in remote regions, transit times may also exceed 60 days. For faster merchandise shipment service, customers can still choose DHL Paket International with Premium service; in this case, items are shipped to the US via air freight. This product can be ordered online and in retail outlets." I have two shipments from Germany that are apparently by ocean freight. I was notified by one seller that the coin I ordered was being shipped this way, which is kind of amazing. I just hope that it is not on board the Pequod. Shipping by this method will be substantially longer than what is customarily expected. Since packages also need to clear US Customs, the shipping time may very well exceed 60 days.
Feel bad for the dealers as I am sure overseas customers have taking their $ elsewhere. I know I haven't bothered with Germany since a low value autograph took nearly 4 months to arrive. I wouldn't chance a coin.
I couldn't post the other guy because of political correctness, which is a real sore spot for some folks.........they don't want to remember.......and neither do I.
Thanks for the heads up! I recently decided to risk buying again from Germany, and luckily the coins made it to New York (where they are currently chilling...). Guess I’ll hold off on Germany again for a while...
Better than my recent experience. In an auction a month ago, I actually had the high bid, but was bidding through Biddr and the electronic signal apparently didn't make it through in time to the "in-person" auction - they sold the coin I won to the second highest bidder. I was waiting a month for the invoice to arrive, and called repeatedly, but was only told the full story this morning. I guess I avoided a bullet there...
My new Severus Alexander/Mars Ultor coin took only 8 days after leaving Cologne, Germany to get to me in NYC, traveling by regular international mail. So, it depends.
I won a coin in the last Solidus auction out of Munich. The day the auction ended I told them to ship it fedex and charge me extra. I think it was only another 12 Euro on top of the normal charge to ship it Fedex. As always ymmv
The Germans may be revered for their engineering. What's next...The Pony Express(stagecoach) to get it to the port loading-dock in Hamburg?
I bid quite often with Kunker and Elsen, Elsen is in Belgium and they ship with Fed Ex. I receive the packages within 7-10 days.
I bid quite often with Jean Elsen. For Early Dated (pre 1500 A.D.) coins he usually has a few pieces I need. Though in the last 4 years it's a little tougher to add. I have a lot of competition from Belgium/Netherlands collectors and One of Each Year (OoEY) collectors. I hope to visit his office one day.
It seems that packages from the US to Germany take less time than from Germany to the US: on November 15th, 2020 I sent a package, regular mail, to my niece in Germany. It arrived at her place 3 weeks later, but she sent me a package, also regular mail, on December 15 and I received it on February 5. Well, maybe it was because of the season?
I did have a package mailed to me two weeks before Thanksgiving, 2020. Received the package mid March 2021. It crossed the Atlantic on the Good Ship Lollipop. I just hope the buffets were good and the shuffle board court was not overly waxed.
I would think the buffets on most if not all cruise ships are rather good. I was just poking fun at the journey my package took on the container ship.
