rockdude mentions gun safe. Right now COSTCO has a top quality Winchester Gun Safe for $499.00. If I weren't selling my house I'd buy one.

I still like my snake pit beside the outhouse inside the dog fence.

My short 12 gauge patterns just over 2 ft at that range with 00.

    It's worked for generations.

Safes are the biggest target of thieves, you might just as well hang a sign out front letting everybody know you have it. And most safes sold are remarkably easy to get into, even store employees can break into the ones they sell in Wally World etc.

My grandparents hid the good stuff in the pantry, in ordinary food cans. Who in their right mind is going to check the dogfood can for dosh?

I like the cat litter solution -- fresh cat litter in the box -- before the cats have a chance to use it.

I really like both of the "under the stairs" places on that website. http://www.hiddenpassageway.com/
Reminds me of Robert De Niro in "Meet the Parents" movie.

But they wouldn't be so great if there was a fire. If you get a safe, then it just tells a thief where it is so they can figure out what they have to do to get in it.
Seems the best thing to do would be a hidden "in ground floor safe".

I would certainly love to have any one of those hidden passage ways. But there would still be a safe or two in there to keep things safe from a fire, or if they happened to find the passageway.
It sure would be nice to have all my coins on the property.

We sometimes run into people at work that have had a loved one pass away and found a few coins. We have also heard enough "hiding spots" to give them ideas as to where to look.

Desk drawers are always a good place. People would tape paper money to the bottom of the drawer. Not good for the paper of course but some rare notes come out of the woodwork that way.

People would also pin money to the inside of long curtains where they could not be seen through a window obviously.

Had one guy that found boxes of proof sets in his father's crawl space. Again, NOT to good for the coins but a place most wouldn't look.

Another lady found a lot of silver coins in the heating ducts of her home when her husband passed away. Just pulled of the vents and there they were.

People look for small spaces that they figure no one will look in.

Personally I once stored some proof sets in a non functioning portable dishwasher. Ran out of room in my safe at the time and figured most thieves don't come into a house to unload your dishes.

A pro thief will not bother to schlep a heavy TV, computer etc out of your house if he thinks there is a box of rare coins somewhere.
As soon as he sees the redbook and numerous other coin books on the shelf plus the coinworld/greysheet bathroom reading material he will be clued in to start digging high and low in the less obvious cubbyholes for hidden coins. Just something to consider.
Most of us make it obvious we are into coins just by books and periodicals laying around the house.

make sure you tell someone you trust

I have seen this many times coins and other valuables hidden and forgotten, you never know what could happen to you, auto wreck, heart attack etc. and your coins are never found or found later by strangers

Your mother in law is over for dinner, while your doing dishes she helps you clean up, by dumping the litter box.

Professional thief knows you have coins, comes in with a metal detector.

Your house burns down, really hurts the value of your coins if they're not in a fire-proof safe.

I like the desk drawer. They find rolls of coins, then leave. You file insurance claim.

    Re: back of the closet

I'm not an expert on this but have read that burglars do check closets.

Put some Chinese fakes in a drawer or closet as a decoy. Alos put a fake Rolex watch next to them. Then put a camera there for them to take that will automatically take and send the pictures when they try to sell them. Problem is that they may get passed off as real. Anyhow just an idea.
