What was the significance or function of the incuse punch marks on Archaic coins?

    Particularly the quadripartite or “mill sail” punches? That question was asked in another thread and I realized I was a bit out of my depth.

    I believe it was to demonstrate the coin had good metal to the core (IE not fouree)

    I am no expert in this, but I think the "mill sail" punch may indicate the coin is worth 4 currency units. Beautiful coin, BTW. :)

    At its most base usage it holds the metal in place while being struck. And then we started getting artistic with it, adding letters, critters and design.
    Early on we were just trying to create a uniform standard for commerce. Then things got so artistic that we don't even know which was the reverse or obverse! Thank you very much Sicilian Celetors:artist::cigar:

    I always wondered what was inside the punches on this one. Whatever’s going on in there looks more than random to me, somehow. Fish? Birds? Broccoli? Pareidolia? LOL
