A few things come to mind: Obverse looks MDS (middle die stage) Reverse looks LDS/VLDS (late die stage/very late die stage) Die Deterioration more/very noticeable on the Reverse: heavy flowlines in the field and the outer devices are mushy and messy. 1982 and 1983 nickels in AU/MS state are desirable to collect Not sure what you were after, but here's something to get you started.
I respect your personal reasons to keep any coin you find but this one is worn, was produced with deterioration and doesn’t have anything odd showing...in short, it is a spender. ...jmho...Spark
Nah that’s ok. Fred said I could come to this site. I’m trying best. Some of you have done this for years. I’m a week in.
@PamR No worries. We all started someplace and back then, access to knowledgeable collectors and information was a lot more work. Books helped a lot and if fortunate enough, a local coin shop to find experience collectors to help develop the knowledgebase. Ease into things if that's your inclination. It's never been a race unless you make it one. Good luck!!
No race especially with the foreign coins. Those are from my dad. Feels good to have them. And just looking through things, I just like posting. I have books etc. But yes, reading is how I will learn.
Here's an article that explains it in detail. In these years, the 2 year hiatus from Mint Sets meant that the UNC population was created by collectors who set these aside from the bank. This drives up the value of course. CoinWeek IQ: United States 1982-P Jefferson Nickel
To your point, I took a quick look at the Red Book pricing for dimes and quarters. The prices associated with those are substantially higher for those years. So yes, the effect of the hiatus affected all denominations for that year. Only Cents do not appear to be affected...or to the same extent perhaps because the variants and mintages for them were substantially higher.
Have found a few more dates 84, 83 nickels. Quarters as well. Saving for my son. Even those dates no matter what markings some are in great condition so he can save for 20 years or more down the road. He is into all types of history.
