I mentioned this error that I bought at the Santa Clara show on another thread, and I just received photos hot off the press from Todd! It's a 1999 Lincoln cent obverse die cap with a stack of NINE Lincoln cents that each got stuck and melded onto each other around the obverse die. The obverse of the actual coin at the bottom of this "cup" is extremely well struck since it was stamped so many times. It was graded by NGC as MS67 but, of course, they couldn't put it in a holder. Whatcha all think?

How would something like that make it out the door?

Did they put it in it's own bag?

    KOOL

What my inquiring mind wants to know is how the world did that thing get out of the mint?

It definitely has cool factor though, got stamped so many times that the copper plating was disintegrated and is down to zinc.

The consensus is that most likely it was "smuggled" out by a mint worker or mint executive.

Very cool error, almost like a shot glass.. :D
    But I have some questions.

Why does it appear to be all over the place? (In other words, why is it as unsymmetrical as it is?) I'm trying to think of the process that has to happen for this sort of error. If all the planchets were stuck together, weren't they straight when that happened? Also, how would they got stuck together, enough for them to still be sticking? And why is one layer (the top one) higher than the rest?

I think you don't quite have the concept of how this happens just right. One planched gets stuck on the die and is lifted with it as another planchet feeds in, the next strike causes the second planchet to stick to the first and so on until there are a total of nine squished together. They are not all done at once but rather one at a time and each one squeezes out in a slightly different direction.

How does the original planchet get stuck on the die?

That is very odd. Thanks for sharing. I wonder how it ever made it out of the mint.

The cynic in me is asking: Why isn't the government pursuing Charmy the way they are pursuing the Langbards? ;)

    Congrats on the neat NEWP...Mike
