Why I just love exonumia . . . . . . I got each one of these for under $50. Z From most expensive at $46 to least expensive at $26 . . . . . . . . . 1861 Belgian Art Festival Medal - Welcome Angel / Bull Harvest - 60mm (undated) French Marianne Medal - Comice Agricole de L'Arrondissement de Bellac - 50mm 1900 Agricultural and Commercial Exhibition in Wels Medal - 46mm 1905 Pike's Peak - 39th National Encampment Grand Army of the Republic - 70mm
I'm not so sure that is a restrike. Hard to tell from the photos. The most notable diagnostics for the restrike is that they were struck from "yellow brass" (yours looks to be red brass) and the fields of the restrikes are more of a "satin" finish. The originals are more "proof-like" mirror finishes. There is where your photo makes it difficult to tell. It looks like red brass, but satin finish. Either way, even for a restrike, at under $50 you did exceedingly well. At $15, you STOLE IT . . . . . If original . . . . . . . . . My restrike ran a bit above the limit for this thread . . . . . .
This is an old find for me, but I did get this nice walker for 22.50$ in October. (Need to take updated photo.) But I did also buy this Dutch 25c piece from 1849 for 3.75$ yesterday. Bad obv detail, but the rev isn't bad.
Here's better pics of the 1941 half. I think it's an mid MS. And a beautiful merc dime I bought for 2$ at my local flea market in August I think.
What's up with the counterstamp on the French medal? Is that original to the piece, or was it added post mint?
Good question. I'll need to do some research on it. It does look original to the strike. No evidence it was done post finish. Z
