Just got in a big, weird batch of Roman imperials with some odd-job provincials, Greek, etc. included. I am really having fun with the attributions and so far am having pretty good luck. However, I am stuck on these three: I feel closest on this one, Marcus Aurelius and Asklepios (3.29 grams / 21 mm). The reverse inscription seems to be gamma-something. Perge, Pessinus, Germe come close, but I can't hit the target. Any ideas? This one might not be Provincial. Zeus on the obverse, maybe, but that thing on his head is puzzling. I am guessing Artemis on the reverse - the short skirt and possibly drawing her bow. Or maybe Athena with a shield? A Greek inscription is not helping me figure this out at all. (1.92 grams / 11 mm). CINN? GINN? This one is probably hopeless. Antoninus Pius on the obv. (or M. Aurelius?) with "ANT" visible. Reverse is a goddess (or Apollo?) standing around, no discernable inscription. (1.89 grams / 14 mm). Any help much appreciated!
Yes, sort of. All I can find are Septimius Severus examples with Asclepius - but they look a lot like mine. Maybe I have the wrong emperor? Thank you for the suggestion! Acrasus is yet another ancient place I'd never heard of.
Yeah, I agree - the artistry is a bit crude, at least by Greek standards. My guess is it is from the hinterlands - Thrace? Or an imitation of something.
Well, I did some more digging, and came up with a clue for the Artemis AE above. I tried searching for Greek cities with two N's in the name. Ever heard of Synnada? Me neither, but the letters on mine seems to be a match: Here's an example of the lettering - wrong coin. https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=5892681 The problem is, I am finding no Synnada issue that looks anything like mine. But I feel this might be the right locale. Maybe. The adventure continues...
