IMHO..the Ike is the worst looking coin the Mint ever produced. With that said....it does make a very striking Proof, the Deep Cameos are rather stunning.
Could some one post some pics of the peg leg, talon head,FEV,1972 T2? Please. I am new to Ikes and want to know what to look for and what to avoid before I start collecting. thanks Kent
jaceravone, The reason for that is the 1972 S Proof was made a Peg Leg by design to help more metal to flow into the hair of Ike to give it more definition. The others were not designed that way but were altered that way through grinding of the dies which can be seen on some with a area between the "R" and Ike's head that has been hit with a grinder meaning it was altered during the process of making coins Die was pulled and hit with a grinder and put back into the press. Here is two links to articles that brought it all into focus for me. Hope this helps.Looking at few hundred of these helped to some extent but the Ike Group Articles really did it for me. http://www.ikegroup.org/PEGE.htm http://ikegroup.org/PLSURVEY.htm Stewart
Thanks Ruben. That was my first Talon Head. I am now searching for a Double. But in the mean time, I did snag a 1974-D major Peg Leg on ebay.
Now those I don't have any of although I have to admit... I won't purchase anything on ebay any longer. Ruben
Thats a nice pegleg! Good thing for you I didn't spot that! Here's a neat Triple Die Obverse I picked up this weekend in a 9 coin lot of 1972-S Proofs: Huge triple spread compared to what you usually see:
I have been extremely lucky with all my Ike Dollar errors & varities I have gotten from ebay. So far - So good But I know even with pictures and a high rating, things can go south. I try to find only raw Ikes and most have been less than $10.00 each including shipping. I have around 20. A few duplicates. All UNC or Proof Mark
OLD story - can't tell it is a DD...and I have 2 Ikes pretty much just like that. I'm really beginning to hate double dies, especially ones that need microscopes to spot and aren't even dicernable by my eye from machine doubling. Ruben
