I was channeling my inner @mrweaseluv last week when I bought this beautiful lady for $15. Well...$15.90 after taxes. The seller's pictures were in a flip and pretty blurry so I was just guessing as to what it looked like. I'm pretty pleased though.
What do you all think? This is only the 2nd Braided Hair large cent I've purchased.

It's a nice coin for the price. Lot of meat left on that bone. Previously cleaned and with some surface problems but so what? Most of these have some problem or other.

This is the only other Braided Hair I have. I think the new one is an upgrade.

Looking at PCGS Photograde, I think she is maybe low AU'ish? Not sure how the old cleaning would affect it.
What do you all think? Looking to learn ):

AU Details wouldn't surprise me. But the Reverse will keep it from a straight grade. But it's still a very nice coin at a good price.

Yeah the reverse was a bit of a bummer. Definitely didn't show up in the seller's pictures. Again, I'm not complaining on a $15 gamble. :)

I would give it au details but marshall called it right. looks a like a bit corrosion on the reverse

Yeah I can't tell if it is corrosion or gunk. My first thought was gunk that wasn't cleaned but IDK.
The main issue I have is the spot at 6 o'clock. So much brighter than the rest of the coin.
How much would a details grade kill the value? I'm looking on numismedia at prices for a straight grade AU and they are waaaaaaaaaay more than what I paid for this one.
I'm not planning on selling, just trying to learn. Besides my 7070 low-grade type set, I know almost next to nothing about earlier US coins.

OK, I lied...This is my 3rd Braided Hair large cent. I have the original 1846, this one, and one that I bought from @lordmarcovan.....That one though, I don't think is OK to post on CT :p It has been altered. lol

general rule I follow for a details grade (and it seems fairly accurate) is drop a 0
au=100 au details=10 this changes with harder to come by dates it all depends on how hard to come by they are :D

Pretty sure i know what you're talking about... unfortunately I bought a couple on ebay that did not have pics of the reverse and was not-so-pleasantly surprised when I got them & saw that they had been altered...:yack::rolleyes:
