This guy walked into the shop this afternoon... Imagine my surprise. Not something you see every day. Enjoy!
Amazing! Love those Territorial Pieces. Having to relocate to Denver, Colorado for business some 15 years ago, one of my endeavors was to do some prospecting of my own. I had a friend who was a Geologist for ARCO. He had had some old survey maps which identified the railroad stops and they also indicated some of the "privy" locations. So, off I went on a 3 week excursion for prospecting and the old rail stations. Well, I found some gold coins, silver and copper coins. Men would use the "privy", drop their britches and often some coins would fall to the dirt floor and get covered when they stood to re-fix their pants. At the same time I traveled thru Wyoming and Montana. What Country!
Very cool Territorial Gold Piece. I have always thought these coins were a really neat piece of history. Thanks for sharing!!!
I did find one graded by PCGS at MS64 that sold for $26,000, and a MS62 graded by NGC that sold for $9200. How would you grade this? My guess would be VF.
LD, I too think it will grade VF. Please do let us know as soon as it comes back. You seem to have amazing good fortune with these "out of the blue" finds. I bet my Rocky Mountain Coin would snap that up from you in a NEW YORK minute!
I like the Colorado gold a bit more because of all the stories of that gold rush as opposed to the California gold rush - even though my family was significantly involved in that one. This is a nice piece, "cleaned" or not it is a significant piece of American history and love the nice 1860's date on it which has to be one of the last dated pieces that was circulated before private coinage was banned during the Civil War.
