I just bought an 1825 Capped Bust Half Dollar, I was trying to buy an 1826 but I couldn't find one that fit my budget or my eye appeal! ;) Do you have a favorite year, post a pic and share why a year or two makes a difference. I know absolutely nothing about this series at all except years ago I sold one and regretted that sale, so I bought another! Plus some have lettered edges and some don't, I thought it was 1814-1831 but that's not totally correct! :D GTG, if you wish, education appreciated!

    She's beautiful!
I only have 2 in my collection, both in the 7070 Type Set. Neither as nice as yours. I don't think I could pick a favorite between them but I do like the design on the reverse of the Lettered Edge coins a bit more. I would like to get more but they are mostly out of my budget.

    @fretboard
    Type 1 Draped Bust 1796 - 1807*
    Type 2 Capped Bust / lettered edge 1807 - 36
    Type 3 Capped Bust / reeded edge 1836 - 39

*any coins minted in 179x are scarce (!)

My favorite year is 1829, as my first CBH was from that year and it wasn’t the last one ;-)

    Regarding your 1825 CBH, I’d say she’s either high F or low VF. It’s an O-114 R1.

I have always been partial to the 1807-8 Capped Bust Half Dollars because they were John Reich's first go at the design. The eagle with the long neck is kind of funky.

I agree with johnmilton, the 07-08 years are my favorite. Lady Liberty changed a good bit through the series, the first years are my eyes favorites. Next I'm looking for pre-1824 coins, the mintages are lower and problem free examples seem like worthwhile buys.
Also I like the 1812 date just because it's a historically important (war) year.
Oh, you always need to check the 1823's out because they didn't have a decent 3 punch, and the touch-up attempts on this numeral can be interesting.
Oh, and a well struck 1810 is worth considering if one comes your way, many are really poorly struck.

I like the ones that show the attempts of the mint to re use dies, or to squeeze every last coin out of a die before it fell apart. Reminds me of a time when everything had to be accomplished with sweat, human or animal.

People tell me I'm a little crazy about 1827...I don't understand why they think that.

How do you GTG on a raw coin?

You can certainly give the coin a grade. Collectors need to learn how to grade coins, not depend upon the TPGs.

The 1823 is one of my favorites. The profile doubling is pretty common but I like it.

Brings to mind a question I've had for years--and also the reason that I seldom participate in GTGs. Do people give what they think the coin should grade or what they thing the TPG called it? Personally, when I do enter I give the coin my grade--not what I think it would be labeled.

I often give both grades, my grade and the grade I think is on the holder.

I don't have many CBH's this one though I am very partial to.
There is a lot of luster under that dark skin. upload_2021-4-16_9-35-8.png upload_2021-4-16_9-38-3.png

Wow...now THAT (1807) is one beautiful coin...! They're all nice in their own ways but this one stands out for obvious reasons.

The question, as asked from the original GTG posts, is: "What grade did the TPG give the coin?" Many folks also give their own assessment of the coin's grade if it differs from what they think the TPG gave it. That's what I often do, if I think they are different.

I think that in order to give it a TPG grade, you have to think like the TPG and understand the market-grading thought process. The GTG threads are very educational tools. I know I have used them to inform and hone my grading skills.

Sure, we can give it a grade,
    But not the GTG
