I know that there are those members who are out there saying to themselves, "Whats the big deal?" Well the big deal is that these types of coins are so scarce. Scarce in the fact that the overall number of these coins don't really exists. There maybe thousands of these or a few hundreds...who knows? Thanks to guys like Lee, and a bunch of other guys in the IKE Group, they are on the cutting edge when it comes to discoverying these gorgeous coins. These guys are searching hundreds if not thousands of these coins to only find less than a handful of these examples. It is probably well accepted that more of these coins exist out there, but where and how many are the big questions. Guys like Lee and others are trying to figure this stuff out. The IKE series is our generations Morgans. Seems like every other day a new variety is found by these guys. These coins are so big and were so hard on the dies that many, many dies were used, so the chances of different die parings is so great. How many pairs??? Well that is part of the discovery process that is currently taking place. Also, just finding a quality/high grade coin is a challenge because most of these coins were tossed in $1000 bags or such and were all knicked and dinged. Personally, I own about 50 of these coins and it appears that no two are alike when you compare dates and mint marks. They are really facinating. Because of this post last night, I feel confident that I have a 71S DDO variety but what I don't know is whether or not it is the major type or minor. Also, may have found a minor 73S DDO variety. I just need to send these to someone who knows this better than I do. Collectors may poopooo these coins as modern garbage, but to me, these are our Morgan dollars of our generation. We have a chance of being a part of numismatic history rather than a spectator.
Nice write up on this. But I did not see anyone poo-pooing it - at least here. I will admit I see nothing on the UNITED, but certainly see the doubling on M and R in america. Very nice coin.
I personally do not find Ike's to be attractive. That being said, I won't disparage someone else's collecting interests, as a lot of people don't find Trade Dollars (Which I collect) desirable. Even so, the coin in the o.p. has made an impression on me, and I might have to add a couple of Ikes to the collection!
Yep I am the same. To me, nothing can beat a Morgan in terms of a dollar coin. They win with me hands down but I can certainly see the attraction in coins like these.
