Hi Coin Talk, BNB here and I was doing some thinking last night about this...

What are all of your thoughts on the young and the old not only on Coin Talk but in the Coin industry(world/whatever you call it) as a whole?

I think there are a handful of older senior members who can't stand the thought of the youth coming in with their high enthusiasm and desire to shake things up a bit .. but then there are a lot of older members who welcome change and the youth with open arms..

What are some of your takes on the issue overall? I'd love to say, "can't we all just get along".. but there will always be people jealous of things that they want and you have..

I also know that in Hindu culture, it is nearly required for the seniors of the public to pass down their knowledge/wisdom to the young generation because the young are basically the future..

I don't see this mentality practiced as much here in the states, but I do see some of it here on this forum.. So that's good. I personally find myself learning the most when a seasoned or highly intelligent member takes his time to share with me what he learned so that one day I can share with someone else what I learned.. It's the passing down of the torch process..

I do also see a lot of competition from the older folks and the younger ones here whether it be from members to moderators, moderators to members, members to members.. I see it. I guess it's the whole notion of, "Yeah you're young, don't come here trying to act like you own the show." mentality. I see that too. It's the "experienced elders/oh, you're young, you still haven't proved yourself until you hit my age" vs. the open minded go getting youth who just want to get some cool coins, learn a few things, and make friends.

Those are my thoughts, what are yours?

Well, there are jerks of all ages and in all walks of life. But I think that for the most part, people (old or not) welcome new people to the hobby. However, what does annoy people who have been in the hobby for a while is when someone new comes along and thinks they are an expert after just weeks of collecting. Its bothersome when someone believes that they can't learn anything from people who came before them. And its frustrating to watch newbies continue to make mistakes rather than slow down and do their homework.

I'm not old, but I find it refreshing when I see younger people and kids getting involved in coins, no matter what they want to collect or how they go about it. I mean, I have a new nephew who isn't even a month old and I'm already working on turning him to coin collecting. Started too late with my kids....not making the same mistake with this one.

I love seeing youngsters get involved in the hobby. One of the most memorable days of my life my son's first coin show. It soon got to the point that I would take him and 2 or 3 of his friends to coin shows - they all loved it and to this day thank me for it.

Same goes for anyone else regardless of age. From 5 to 85 - I'm all for helping anyone I can. And will sometimes go to extraordinary lengths to do so.

What does tic me off however are those, regardless of age, who act like they know it all when they know next to nothing.

I can't think of a single example of this that I have seen. All of the "older" collectors I have encountered seemed pleased that I was interested in the hobby and had tons of advice to share. I really haven't been met with any negative response to my "youthfulness." I have dealt with some rude dealers in the past..but I don't think it had to do with my age.

Didn't you teach Augustus everything he knew about coins? There is also a rumor that you designed the Denarius, can you confirm this? Is that why you hate ancients, because it reminds you of your good ole days? :goofer:

It is my personal goal to involve my son in Numismatics...
I have also tried to promote Numismatics in various ways to young, mid and older folks.
I welcome all into this field and just remember that those who came before you knew something that you did not, "respect" will go a long way in learning about things of which you express interest.

I have been around in this field for going on 30 years...I still look up to those "older" collectors as mentors, for their knowledge is partly responsible for my knowledge. There are some bright younger collectors as well that specialize in certain Numismatic areas, if you are interested, seek out their knowledge as well. Just remember, in modern day, it is written somewhere, you just have to have the desire to find it.

I'm with ya, C-DMD. What are you talking about, BNB ?

Right-o. It has nothing to do with age. It has everything to do with human nature; some folks are rude, and some of us over-react to a minor slight and consider it much more rude than it was... while some of us, in fact, are not much better and surely have done the same thing to others at one time.

We've all encountered the same thing, and it has nothing to do with age or gender.

For me, one of the coolest things that's ever happened in collecting involved sitting down with a jar full of wheaties, a Whitman folder, and my five year old niece at Christmas.

Another wonderful experience is taking my 14 year old nephew to the big Houston show. Awesome guy !

We have a highly successful culture here in The States. We're doing something right.

Vicious rumors, no truth to it at all.

True - the key is sticking with it, listening, not taking personal offense at comments on coins and certainly never get discouraged. Everybody young and hold need to just enjoy collecting.

To me - young or old it really does not matter, all are welcome.

I feel that some people take their criticisms personal from older or even younger people because they want to feel included with the crowd and not less than in any way.. That's just human nature.

Thanks, GD... I was getting ready to go into a long rant about people like that, but you said it for me.

I think you are confusing age and knowledge.

I don't see anyone reacting badly to the young. To the contrary, there are lots of reach-out programs for YNs, here and elsewhere.

However, when someone comes into this forum and starts spouting off ignorant comments, the people call them out -- as it should be, IMO.

Simple as that, in my eyes....Mike

Hmm. No, I still can get the vibe that there are some older members that just don't want to lose the spot they spent years building on all these years to some new guy.. but it ends up happening.

Hey, there are lots of well meaning older people too. Don't forget I said that ;)
    Actually more than not.
