Trade Dollar opinions

This is a recently purchased Trade Dollar. It is in a PCGS slab. How do you think it graded? Did it grade, or is it in a 'genuine' slab? I will add that it has decent cartwheeling when tilted in the light. It would be a good learning experience if you explain your reasoning. (If you are already familiar with the coin, please withhold comment until I post what PCGS thought about it. Thanks!)

This is one of my first trade dollars ive even seen so my opinion means nothing at all, but ill bite on the guessing game. ill say they gave it a mid level AU? Now lets see how 200% wrong I am :hail:

 

I would say AU-55 details with an old cleaning. I think it's a coin toss as to whether or not it would grade...depending on the remaining luster. My amateur guess.

 

I would say the coin is genuine and has environmental damage, possibly fire damage.

 

Thanks for your opinions. Any others? If you're bored, have a close look at the details....

I would guess it got the "genuine" deal. Looks like it might have been dug and cleaned.

It looks to me that is has AU details and was cleaned in the past...the cleaning is particularly evident on the reverse around the words. Because it is a common date...I think it is likely that this coin would end up in a "Genuine" holder but if it were a better date it would grade.

 

I'd say Genuine....Looks like someone took a wire brush to it....

 

And that scratch by the third star on the right sure doesn't help the eye appeal!

It looks like "Barn*cl* Bil*" (asterisks where I'm not sure of the letters)

 

I'd say AU-58 but cleaned.

 

The position of the twin lights brought that one out. In hand, it is unobtrusive. The hairlines don't extend onto the devices, and to the naked eye are not especially detracting (IMO).

I'll post the grade (or 'genuine designation') and some other info tomorrow night, and maybe try to get a tangential discussion going. Good night, thanks, and I look forward to more honest opinions!

 

Without looking at other responses, it seems obvious it's harshly cleaned. I would be very surprised to find it in a full-graded holder. Gotta say "genuine / not gradable".

 

Maybe... but I personally feel the "key date bias" is not nearly enough to cover this coin. The cleaning is too harsh and obvious.

Many very, very valuable coins wind up in "genuine" holders. The "key date bias" is usually only a grade bump and less likely to help a coin escape "problem" status.

 

I not sure if I see obvious tooling on the coin or not, some parts do look strange tho. That would have to be one I would have to see in hand.

I don't know if I agree with that. I have seen a number of key date coins in graded PCGS holders when they have been clearly cleaned.
