First - define rare. Based on what I expect you to use as a definition, there have been 2, and possibly 3, already mentioned in this thread.

I cannot believe the veracity of arguments above over the mere definition of what constitutes "rare". Simply amazing.

Terminology in numismatics is a very important thing. And so is knowing the correct definitions of the words. For example, a novice may ask about a coin he owns wanting to know its approximate value. He describes it as being in very good condition.

Now to him that means one thing, but to anyone in numismatics it means something entirely different. Very Good is one of the lowest grades, but to the novice he is trying to say the coin is one of the higher grades.

    Same thing goes for rare.

Why is it than only threads where people are arguing go over 100 posts?

Everyone has an opinion and everyone has a say. That's the beauty of life. At least we can speak back and disagree without repercussions. This is what moves our world. We all live on disagreement. We disagree to agree :)

I love the back and forth on this forum as long as the peeps don't start getting all huffy and puffy as I have see a few times. I want to see the argument. If it was a perfect conversation it would be like my marriage........... Tex waiting for the laughter to stop.

Because if everybody agreed there wouldn't be anything else to say now would there ?

You can call it an argument, sometimes it is. But more often than not it is nothing but discussion. That's what discussion is - those, usually on opposing sides of an issue, presenting their opinions, facts and points of view.

And disagreeing someone on a forum is not flaming them, nor is it attacking them. It is merely disagreeing.

I thought some of the posts in this topic were argumentative, but not the parts where everyone was discussing what constitutes "rare" and "scarce". That's interesting to me.

If I disagreed with that I wouldn't have made the warning I did in this thread.

Which makes me ponder of the veracity of such flaming and attacking - would you do this at a coin club or coin show, or would you act more humane to your fellow collector?

I believe it is forgotten here, that you should treat this forum more personally and less like some anonymous computer screen.

As with anything else, it's a matter of definitions and opinion. What you (or another) might consider to be flaming or attacking, may not be what we, the CT staff, consider to be flaming or attacking.

Having seen all too often what happens elsewhere, in other forums, I assure you nothing on this forum comes anywhere close to that. And anything that does is removed and the poster censured for it. But all in all, flaming is quite rare on this forum. And I think everybody knows what my definition of rare is.

We use OUR judgement, that's why the mods are here. That is also why there is a Report This Post button, so the members can use THEIR judgement. And if we agree with the report, we take action. If we do not agree, then nothing happens.

And regarding your question about the difference between forum behavior and face to face behavior. On this forum I am very nice and well behaved guy - in person, not everybody is of that opinion. For in person I can be quite harsh, blunt to a fault even and tend to not say things as nicely as I do here.
