The early gossip is it may go for $10-$15 MM which would be a nice move from the total (including bp) of $7.6 MM in 2002.

Of course, had the $$$ been invested in the stock market at that time, he'd have about $45 MM !!! :D

I hope it doesn't meet the reserve so the other coins that the Feds stole won't be worth as much.

Does the owner (S. Weitzman) also have 2 rare stamps (Inverted Jenny and British Guiana 1 cent magenta) that he's auctioning off?

He may not use reserves as he wants them sold for his charitable foundation.

"Charitable Foundation"? Isn't that another name for tax write-off?

Probably from Israel Switt's bag as he snuck out the back door.

I thought it was 7-year old Joan Langbord crawling through the ductworks......:D

I was so relieved that with millions of Americans overseas fighting Tojo and Hitler.....Nazi spies on our American shores engaging in sabotage....Colonel Hogan and his men trapped in Stalag 13.....that the Treasury and Secret Service could spend time in the 1940's hunting down Double Eagles selling at 40x face value ! :D

It is a tax write-off but I'd rather see the money go to them than the US Government. If the charities are reputable, they'll put it to better use than the US Gov't.

Sorry for yanking your chain a little, but you've started this stuff in multiple threads on multiple forums, and I know it's you favorite ax to grind or windmill to till at. The Langbord coins will forever be the property of the US government as they were when Switt walked out with them (another chain yank) and the opinions about this don't matter.

It's certainly curious that PCGS granted this coin an unholdered grade. What if somebody puts their big fat finger on it or drops it?

Actually, I believe the 10 coins WILL be returned at some point to the Langbord's or their heirs.

You are aware that some Treasury official has said that the same logic should/could be used to confiscate Liberty Nickels, patterns, Flying Cents, etc....that were not "properly" released, right ?

I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want your coins confiscated and then have the confiscators declare them for sale....70% above what you paid for them, right ? :D That's what the government did when it ordered gold be turned in. My poor ancestors -- and lots of others -- got shafted.

I don't like it when the government lies to its citizens in order to screw them.
    Caveat Emptor !

Hey, remember what happened to that painting owned by Steve Wynn. :D

I guess coins get better with age. This coin has long been regarded as an MS-63 because of the obvious marks on Ms. Liberty’s leg. Now PCGS is calling it MS-65. Rarity and fame do not raise the grade. This is just some pandering to get a prestigious certification.

Years ago one of the services did the same with the coins in the King of Siam Proof set raising all of the grades from 65 to 66.

I was hoping it would have been slabbed so it could go to CAC and get a bean. It would have made it worth more:)

    Wow....you think it's 2 grades too high, not just 1 ?? :wideyed:

Those are 2 deep gouges on her left leg....probably from when the Secret Service agents wrestled Fenton in the Waldorf and the coin fell. :D
