Nice publicity stunt. Unfortunately, there is no proof to back it up. Atleast they got their 15 minutes and some free publicity for thier business.

Sure it's definitely a publicity stunt. That said, if I was in the area I would stop by there. Besides, it's publicity for his coin shop first, but also for coin collectors as a whole which is always a good thing in my view.

He could have cheaped out and used a double struck '55 cent instead of the DDO, too. The article said it was "struck twice".

Or maybe even one of the common '55 DDOs. Some are worth about $2.00 circulated.

    huh?

Or do you mean the Poor Man's DDO?
    Which isn't a DDO.

No. There are some legitimate DDOs for that date that are worth only a few dollars.

Not all 1955 DDOs are 'the big one'.

And I'm about to release a hundred, brand new, never driven, 1957 Chevy Convertables I've been storing in a secrete warehouse soon too. :smile

If I find one on the street can I just pick it up and call it mine like I could with the penny Carl? :D It is a good publicity stunt though. Good for him, if there were more ingenuity among small business owners, maybe most of them wouldn't go out of business in the first few years!

I placed a 2008-D cent into circulation yesterday. It probably graded an XF-20. Someone's getting rich out there.

If it was graded XF-20, it was graded by someone who didn't have a clue about grading.

By the way, this stunt has been done before. A couple of years ago, someone claimed to do this with, as I recall, 1914-D and 1909-S (VDB?) cents.

I'm thinking the ANA did this a few years back to advertise a show.
